Caden saw Stefan sitting on a bench outside the school. He didn't know if he wanted to speak to him, still thinking about what happened on his birthday. Unfortunately, before he could make his escape, Stefan saw him and got up, making his way over to him.

Crap.

"You've been avoiding me." Stefan said bluntly.

"Have I?" Caden furrowed his eyebrows. "No, I haven't. What makes you think that?"

"Every time you see me, you walk the other way."

"Oh." Caden cleared his throat. "Sorry, I guess, um - " Quick, come up with a lie, "- me telling you I was gay freaked me out a bit, you know?"

"I already told you that there was nothing wrong with that." Stefan said bluntly.

Caden wanted to change the subject. "Where's your friend? Lexi?"

At the mention of her, Stefan's eyes filled with sadness. "She, um, she left town."

Caden just took the sadness in his eyes as him being sad about her leaving. "I'm sure she'll be back soon." Stefan tried to smile. "Um, I got to get to class. I'll see you later." He walked around him.

Stefan watched him leave.

Caden was back at home, sitting on the couch across from his brother and reading a book. He loved to read. It was basically all he used to do since he didn't use to have friends. For the past couple weeks he had stopped because people had started to take notice of him.

"Hey, what do you think?" Jeremy turned his sketch pad around and showed it.

Caden looked over at him. It looked like a vampire from some horror story. "Very good, Jer." Jeremy smiled happily at him, glad he impressed him.

Jenna had the opposite reaction. "Creepy."

"I found this old journal in dad's stuff, Johnathan Gilbert from the 1800s. He's kind of a freak show." Jeremy started and Cade put his book down so he could listen to him. "He wrote about demons and all of these people getting slaughter and..."

Jenna nodded. "Yeah, he was a writer... short stories, horror stuff."

"Oh, he wrote fiction?" Jeremy furrowed his eyebrows. "Figured he was just a lunatic or a drunk."

Jenna grabbed a book from a nearby shelf. "Well, he was a Gilbert, probably a little bit of both." She handed him the book.

Cade laughed and looked back down to read.

Caden was walking down the hallway of school, eyes flicking to each career booth. Today was the day of the career fair. His eyes caught one and he walked over to it. The writing booth. He's always thought of what it would be like to be an author or an editor. To work in literature was something he had always thought about.
