Elena heard a knock at the door and stood up to open it, smiling when she saw Stefan. She reached forward and grabbed his arm to pull him into the house. "Hi." She greeted sweetly.

"Hi." He gave her a nod back. She lead him back into the kitchen and as soon as he saw Caden his face lit up in a way Elena had wanted him to do with her. She could only hope it was her imagination. There was no way Stefan could feel anything towards Cade.

Elena ended up getting out old family boxes and sat them in the dining room table. Cade sat at the counter with his chin in his palm. Stefan was by Elena's side by glanced at Cade every now and then.

"Do you think Damon really believes us? That we're both trying to help him?" Elena questioned.

"I don't think Damon knows what to believe. Trust isn't something that comes naturally to him."

She sighed. "You know... I really think that Damon believes that everything he's done, every move that he's made, he's done for love. It's twisted, but kind of sad."

"It is." Caden agreed. "He must really love her." He looked down, feeling guilty.

"There are other ways to get what you want. You don't have to kill people. Damon has no regard for human life. He enjoys inflicting pain on others. For 145 years, every single time that I have let my guard down and let Damon back into my life, he's done something to make me regret that. I'm not going to make that mistake again." Stefan spoke.

Cade nodded his head, pushing the guilt aside. He needed to be with Stefan. He couldn't start feeling guilty now. "So what do you think will happen if the tomb gets opened and Damon gets Katherine back?"

Stefan leaned forward. "I think that no matter what Damon promises, a lot of people will die." Elena exhaled loudly before pulling a photo from the box. "That's Johnathan Gilbert."

"What's this?" Elena pulled a wooden box out and opened it. A muzzle was inside. One that looked like it would go on a human.

Jeremy walked into the room with his hands stuffed in his pockets. "What are you guys doing?"

"Hey. Just going through some stuff, feeling sentimental. Dad had this old family journal from years ago. I thought I'd dig it up." Elena answered.

Jeremy sat down at the kitchen counter next to Cade. "Johnathan Gilbert's journal?"

Cade raised his eyebrows. "What do you know about it?"

"I just did a history report on it."

"Oh. So where is it now?" She asked.

"I gave it to Mr. Saltzman. He wanted to see it."

🌺

"What are you gonna do when you get there?" Caden asked as he walked Stefan to the door. The vampire was leaving to confront the teacher about the journal.
