Chapter 14

- Hiro ... nii-chan?

He laughs softly.

- Now you remember me ?

I cling to his clothes as if I was afraid that he'd suddenly disappear and rest my head against his chest.

- How did you find me ...?

He tightens his hug and rests his head on mine.

- It doesn't matter now.

Suddenly, we hear footsteps from the staircase. I freeze as Scotch releases his grip and walks away. As I instinctively follow him, he bends down and picks up my gun. I stop near him. He gets up and hands it to me, putting his free hand on my shoulder.

- If we're seen together, you'll be in trouble.

He points to the half-open door leading to the stairs.

- Hide behind and watch for an opportunity to leave.

- And you ? Don't tell me you're going to...

He puts his hand on my head and smiles at me.

- Don't worry! I have an escape plan. Now go hide, and don't make any noise this time!

This time ?

I take the weapon he hands me and move his hand away.

- It's okay, I'm not a child anymore!

I hear him laugh behind my back as I walk away, smiling. I stand behind the door a few seconds before the person climbing the stairs arrives. I hear Scotch talking to the new arrival.

- Well well... Who could have sent you, Rye?

Rye?

- No one in particular, I came on my own.

This voice... Akai?

A few minutes passes as I don't really understand what they say. I don't watch though.

- Well done, Scotch... You pretended to give up in order to steal my gun...

I finally decide to look behind the door and observe the situation. Akai has his back to me and Scotch, in front of him, carries a pistol pointed at his opponent.

- I am not going to pray for my life, but what about you listen to me before shooting?

- I didn't steal your gun to kill you, but rather to do that!

Scotch turns the gun back to his chest. As I take a step towards him, Akai -who was closer- steps forward and puts his hand on the weapon.

- It's useless. Once someone squeezes the cylinder of a revolver, human strength isn't enough to pull the trigger. Give up on commiting suicide, Scotch. You are not a man who deserves to die here.

- What ?

- I am Akai Shûichi, an FBI agent infiltrated in the organization. Just like you I am a dog who tries to bite them. If you understand, drop your gun and listen to me. Letting you escape wouldn't be too much of a problem for me...

Reassured, I leave my hiding place entirely. Judging surely that a good opportunity has presented itself, I go out discreetly and head for the stairs. I go down them as slowly  and as silently as possible. Before I cross the third step, I stop in my movement... 

I just heard footsteps lower in the staircase. I turn around to join Scotch but suddenly hear a gunshot.
