SHAKES POV
It was a normal day for us boys in Hell's Kitchen, it was currently 11:30am and we were attending a church gathering on request by Father Bobby. There was an active competition between the four of us to come up with the best and boldest prank. Two weeks into the new summer semester, I found the nun's clacker in the school hallway and I was ready for the big leagues. In church it was used to alert the girls as to when they should stand, sit, kneel and genuflect, all based on the number of times the clacker pressed. In my pocket it was cause for havoc.
While Father Dan, one of the fellow priests of Father Bobby, was giving us a little speech for our upcoming semester, Mike and I were sitting in the benches behind John and Tommy. None of us was really paying attention to Father Dan who was not even close to the end of his lecture, still talking with full pride and joy about the new stuff we were going to learn as altar boys and girls.
*clack clack*
The girls, who were sitting on the right side of the church's aisle, all stood up with some stumbling and clutter, interrupting Father Dan with his speech.
Our church's head nun, nun Emilia, who was in charge of the clacker, was stunned by her girls standing up by the 2 clacks that did not come from the one in her hand. Eyes-wide, she clacked once, signaling the girls to sit down.
Father Dan, surprised by the act of the girls, quickly picked up where he ended before he got interrupted. "You will be defenders of the faith, you will be soldiers of Christ, and you will all receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." He turned back to the girls, giving them a small nod to make sure they were all seated and paying attention to what he said.
I chuckled, trying to hold in my laughter while pressing the clacker again, 3 times this time.
*clack clack clack*
All 30 girls reacted almost immediately to the sound of the clacker, all standing up and kneeling down to the pew in front of them.
Nun Emilia was once again flabbergasted by her girls and the sound of yet another clacker. She shared some unsure looks with her fellow nuns next to her before clacking 1 time, signaling the girls, again, to sit down.
Father Dan, this time a bit taken back from the act in front of him, confusion written all over his face tried to pick up where he was left again.
I chuckled again, John and Tommy turning around to face us, amusement all over their faces, knowing damn well what was happening. I was about to clack again when I heard Father Bobby standing up from the spot he took earlier to take a seat in the row behind us.
"Let me have the clacker" He whispered only loud enough for me to hear.
"What clacker?" I questioned, acting like I wasn't the one who caused the agitation.
"Now." He replied.
I handed over the clacker, rather disappointed the act was over already. Father Bobby took it and sat back, pointing his finger towards Father Dan gesturing me to pay attention to what was being said.
"Let everyone rise." Father Dan said while lifting his arms up to both sides for the boys and girls in front of him.
*clack clack*
Nun Emilia clacked 2 times, signaling the girls to stand up, followed by herself.
Everyone was standing with their hands folded together while Father Dan bowed his head down and said: "Let us pray."
