"You... what?" Yeonjun leaned against the wall of Antoinette's woodworking shop as if he was about to fall over in shock. "I'm sorry... I didn't know either. B-but I'll finally be able to get a bigger studio and-"
"And? What about me, Ani? I thought..."
Antoinette's heart sunk, as if it hit a rock in a river and just started sinking with no time for her to bucket out the water. Yeonjun and Antoinette had practically been dating for over two years before she discovered her past. Before she was told she was engaged. "I... I didn't know any of this, Yeo. I promise. I only just found out yesterday, as if that was a great time to tell me I was engaged to a prince. On my birthday. This isn't... easy on me either." She said.
Antoinette lightly kicked at some of the wood shavings that had gathered around their feet, from her lame attempts of finishing that stupid rocking chair. It was futile, of course, considering her arrival to the palace was scheduled for that evening, and it was already 3:00 in the afternoon.
Yeonjun stared at her for a moment, his eyes glazed, void of any readable emotion. After what felt like hours, he gave a dry laugh and stood back up from the wall. "I guess I held no chance against the prince of The Kingdom Of Korea... Unless you say no." He said as he leaned forward, uncomfortably close to Antoinette's face. She backed up with a shake of her head. "That's illegal and you know it. Our parents organized this, if we were to go against that order I'd be arrested rather than with you, and you know this."
Everyone knew this. Almost all kings and queens of the Kingdoms of Unity were arranged. No questions asked about it, either. So why should Antoinette act any different? She picked up her backpack, which was practically loaded down with miscellaneous tools and random electronics she knew she'd want.
It wasn't even a need with Antoinette, it was always a want when it came to her addictions. Her woodworking and gaming addictions were not for the faint of heart, especially with how much money she spent on them. From phones specifically bought for gaming, to handheld consoles, Antoinette would never be bored.
Which she felt would be inevitable in a palace of such proportions as Korea's"So you're just going to throw us away, then? All that you and I gave each other, and sacrificed so no one found out because of some mysterious reason holding us back. It's gone, just like that?" His eyes held a world of hurt behind them, yet Antoinette used every ounce of effort she had left to look past it, her teeth biting into her lip.
She had already thought about pushing away this engagement, to tell the prince to take a bite of a rotten lemon. But instead, she thought ... why not? Just one step closer back to France. The answers she'd held her entire childhood were in France and she just knew it. This was the biggest chance she could get to go. To run away and never look back. To find herself for the first time.
Since she first read those words. The moment she knew where she was from, that she wasn't just some defect in a world of a whole other race. She was from France... it all made sense at that point, why her relatives would speak a different language, or why she was learning French once she started middle school. And one more question stirred among the others. She wasn't just from France, but the Princess?
Antoinette took a deep breath, the burnt wood smell from the machinery burning her lungs.
"I guess so. You know I don't have a choice, Yeonjun. It's either marry the prince or my father's alliance would've been for nothing."
He cringed. "You aren't even willing to try? To even run off to another part of the Unity to be together?"She shook her head. Even though Antoinette really did want that.
Yeonjun gave a scoff with a roll of his eyes. "I see, you liked the Prince in the first place, didn't you? Part of his fan club, were you?" Antoinette gaped at him, and she knew at this point he was just trying to make sense of all of this. But how could he? She couldn't even comprehend everything when she was told, how could she expect him to?
"Well, I guess this is goodbye." He said. Yeonjun took a few steps back, then he was out the door with a harsh slam.
Antoinette stared at the still rattling door, her eyes wide.
Their entire 'relationship,' Antoinette had always thought it was nothing more than dates. Maybe even a few hand holds now and then.
Never once did Yeonjun ask her to be his girlfriend. Never once did he express his love for her.She hardly even knew what love was, anymore. No parent ever gave it to her; and apparently, no man ever would either.
