Everyone was already sleeping when the child silently slipped out of their room in their white pyjama. They could barely see the corridor that lead to the exit door, but didn't want to turn on their flashlight in the risk of waking someone up. The kid guided themselves by sliding their fingers on the wall being careful not to be noisy and finally got up the stairs stealthily. They pushed the door open and closed it behind them, without making any sound.
The outside world.
Something they'd never seen before.
The fugitive took a deep breath of this new fresh air and started walking in a random direction with their light backpack, not even knowing where they were going. They were just hoping to get out of this forest easily and quickly because they didn't put much in their backpack. Just enough food for two days, a water bottle, a flashlight and a kitchen knife, just in case. After seven years of being trapped underground with nasty villains that were training the kid to become just like them, they couldn't give a damn about what they might've left behind. They just needed to escape for their own good.
But, wait...
Wasn't it too easy?
They didn't see any surveillance cameras and no alarm system had been heard. No doors were locked and... shouldn't there be guards somewhere?
The kid started panicking as they noticed a big wall appearing behind all those trees that were hiding it. A wall that was meters high. Something impossible to climb, even with a rope. They had to squint their eyes to see the top of this wall.
Crap. That's why there weren't any surveillance. They knew it was just impossible for me to escape.
The child walked longing the wall to see where it'd lead them, only to discover it wasn't worth it. The wall kept going for miles.
After thirty minutes of trying to find an exit door in the dark, they were about to sit down when something caught their attention. Something really small, almost unnoticeable. They pointed the flashlight at the bottom of the wall to see some letters engraved in the stone. They didn't know what those meant. They had learned a bit how to read, but this... this thing was far from being a word. A bunch of "M"s and "C"s with "D"s, "V"s and "I"s. They didn't pay much attention to it.
The young child decided to take a break from searching the exit. They had woken up less than an hour ago in the middle of the night, after all. They were exhausted. They let themselves fall on their knees before leaning their back on the wall behind them, their backpack leaning in the grass at their left. The kid took a deep breath and looked up through all the branches to stare at the stars. Every single one of them were dazzling.
After a few minutes of stargazing, they couldn't help but feel sad. A tear rolled down their cheek before being wiped off with the back of the sleeve of their pyjama.
It was their first time seeing the outside world, especially the stars. And now that they were finally out, they realized there was nowhere to go. Maybe this would be the their first and last time seeing the outside.
They were never allowed to leave the underground because the villains pretended that it was too dangerous and that they already had whatever they needed in the hideout, but what they really wanted was a normal and happy life. Something they never had.
To change their mind, they took their backpack putting it back on their shoulders as they stood up. Back on their feet, they started to feel dizzy and fell on their back, bumping their head on the wall behind them. The kid's vision began to blur because of exhaustion and their head was now spinning.
I'm s-so... tired.
(Flashback)
They were hiding in the corner of their room with their hands on their ears to cover the big man's horrible voice. "You better show yourself before regretting it!" the master yelled. They were frightened, but still, things were about to be bad if they didn't show themselves. She got up and opened their door, walking down the hall to go in the training room where they last saw the man. They were crying. "Sorry..." they said between two sobs. "What did you say? I didn't hear you properly." "I... I s-said sorry, master. I won't leave while we are training anymore." "Good. Now put your gloves on."The kid was shaking nervously because they knew what was coming. They put their gloves on and turned around to face the big man who already had put his gloves covered in blood due to their previous trainings. He threw a punch in the child's ribs without a warning. They fell on the ground using their forearm to absorb the landing and coughed blood. "Get up. You're waisting my time." They got up with their left hand on their stomach that was aching, receiving a second punch, but this time in their face. The child fell on the ground again as they passed out.
(End of flashback)They closed their eyes as their felt her body lifting up the ground as if something was carrying them. It was comfortable, cold and warm at the same time. They didn't have the strength to open their eyes to look who it was or what it was. They let themselves being carried away since they were too exhausted to protest.
They were feeling the cold breeze on their face as their body was being carried away. They took a deep breath to remember the smell of the outside world just in case they were taking her back.
The villains. The kid was just hoping they weren't going to lock them in the underground hideout for the rest of their life.
