Springs and Sunsets

It's a beautiful evening at the Water Tower. Wakko is taking a nap on the couch after he and Tinx binged a ton of their favorite shows and movies last night, Tinx is in the kitchen "improving" the sink, Dot is in the bathroom experimenting new hairstyles, Yakko is on his tablet looking for a gift for Kix to show how much he appreciates her as usual, and Kix is sitting on the roof, staring intensely at the sunset.

She sighs.

A lot has been going through her mind lately, mainly her attitude towards Yakko. He constantly admits that he likes her, but she always pushes his feelings away.

She wonders if she's ever gone too far. What if he's hurting on the inside, but never said anything because he didn't want her to worry?

What if his crush on her is actually gone and is just doing it for a routine? Even if she apologized, would he even forgive her?

Kix has always been tense when it comes to talking to others. Socializing isn't one of her strong suits. She wonders what it would be like if she was more relaxed when she arrived at the Water Tower with Tinx. Would the Warner's treat her differently if she did?

She sighs once again.

Her deep thoughts are suddenly interrupted by the sound of the door opening. She flinches as she saw Yakko high jump next to her wearing springy-shoes Tinx crafted months ago.

"What are you doing here?" Kix snapped.

"Everyone was inside expect you. I wanted to see if you were okay," he calmly explained.

"Why'd you check the roof of all places?"

"It's where we first met, wasn't it?" He sat next to her.

"Technically, it was the attic, but continue," she corrected.

He laughs, which cracked a smile out of Kix.

"I just wanted to see if you're okay," he explained.

"Why wouldn't I be?" She tries to hide her smile.

"You seemed to be in some sort of concentrative daze recently, even longer than usual. You seemed to be upset over something. Ya know you can always talk to me, right?" He looked at her with a sad expression.

She looks down at the ground and pauses for a while. "Have I ever hurt you?"

Yakko looked confused. "What do you mean?"

"Have I ever hurt you verbally or even mentally with my words or actions?" She sounded more worried with every word she spoke.

"Every time you do something nice for me or heck, even admit your feelings, I always push you away, and for what?! I don't intentionally mean to hurt you. I'm- not very good with affection is all."

"Well, do you feel the same way back?" He sounded hopeful as he kept trying to look at Kix who was trying not to cry.

She hesitates. "Would you still like me if I did...?"

"Nothing would change, really. The Water Tower would still be standing, you would still wear glasses, the others would still be the same height, I would still be charming as usual-,"

Kix interrupts him by her laughing. He gently smiles at her as she finally turns around towards him.

"I don't know what's funnier, your words or the fact that you're really forgiving!" Tears start to fall down her face. A mixture of genuine joy and mild sadness with a hint of embarrassment.

Yakko chuckles with her before placing a hand on her shoulder. She tones down her laughter and looks directly in his eyes.

"I know you don't mean any harm when it comes to your choice of words. You're protecting yourself and there's nothing wrong with that. You're a really sweet girl, Kix. One of the best people I've ever met for sure!"

He lifts her glasses up and wipes Kix's tears away. He admires her eyes for a moment.

"I can't see, you know?" She breaks his concentration.

He puts her glasses back on.

"Sorry about that, heh!" He nervously says. "Have you ever thought about wearing contacts?"

"Occasionally. My mom wore them often. I always thought her eyes looked really pretty when she did. Well, I always thought her eyes were pretty, regardless, but it was something about her personality whenever she wore them. She seemed more carefree, determined, happy. Why do you ask?"

"Your eyes look really pretty without your glasses," he rubs the back of his neck, slightly blushing.

His comment also made Kix look away and blush.

"Thank you," she mumbles.

"Anytime, Kix," he looks at her before they turn to the sunset. "Anytime."

Not saying a word, they exchanging glances at each other when one isn't looking at the other, they wanted this feeling to last forever.

"You should try to relax more often."

Kix turns to him and hums in confusion.

"Didn't mean for it to come out that way," he nervously laughs. "All I'm saying is that there's no need for you to have all this pressure on yourself. I know you're looking out for us, and we really appreciate that from you, but please remember to go easy on yourself too."

Without hesitation, she hugs Yakko. He's caught off-guard and starts to slip on the roof. Kix realizes what she just did and braces for impact, but Yakko starts jumping around the movie lot with the help of Tinx's springy-shoes. She looks around to see her and Yakko high in the air. She doesn't say a word, she only looks at Yakko who seems really brave. She rests her head on his shoulder as they explore the lot like they've never seen it before.

Ten minutes later:

They arrive back at the Water Tower. Yakko opens the door for Kix.

"After you, madam."

She giggles and walks inside. Tinx immediately bombards them with questions.

"Where have you two been?! Where did you go? Wanna try the kitchen sink? Were you two alone this whole time?" She gasps. "Did you two finally go on a date!?"

The two laugh at Tinx's excitement.

"We'll be glad to answer those questions right after you demonstrate your latest- improvement to Yakko. I'm more than positive, he'll be impressed at the results," she smugly grins at Yakko.

He's completely shocked at what she just said. Tinx grabs his hand and leads him to the kitchen.

"Sweet! Here's the best upgrade yet!"

He looks back at Kix. "You owe me!" He mouths.

She stifles in a laugh.

Two hours later:

Night falls. Yakko and Kix are back on the roof stargazing with the moonbeams shining down upon them.

"Do you know any constellations?" Yakko asks.

"Only the Big and Little Dipper, yet I never know where they are. It's pretty ironic when you think about it."

"Think about what?"

"You'd expect me to know a lot about the world, but I don't. Yes, I act like a know-it-all often, but in the end, all I want is to be respected by others," she sighs.

Yakko sits up and puts his hand out. "Well, you've already earned mine," he smiles.

She shakes his hand and looks back at the stars. Yakko continues to stare at Kix's wondrous expression.

"This has been a really great day, Yakko," she turns to Yakko and smiles. "I'm glad I spent it with you," she holds out her hand.

He gently holds it and rubs the top of her hand.

"I'm always happy whenever I'm with you."
