"Heyyy," my best friend Rina's voice drawled out from from my phone, which was on speaker, laying on my desk as I tried my level best to figure out how I was going to organise my things in this tiny space that they called my dorm room.
We had both decided a few months ago, to my immense joy, that we'd both be going to the same university.
It had been our dream since middle school, which seemed impossible after we chose completely different career paths and she transferred schools in high school, but our friendship persisted stronger than ever and to my surprise, 14 year old me's dream had come through.
We decided that we'd be roommates, even set up a bunch of rules, like best friend code that we had to follow. And it was amazing that years later, it had all come true.
I was here to major in biomedical engineering, and Rina for Visual art and design- two vastly different programs, but they both had quite good courses here.
Though we were going to be sharing a room, she hadn't come to campus yet- there were three move in days, and I had gotten slotted in for the first one, which was a Friday. She was coming on Sunday evening, which meant I still had a ton of time to spend alone.
"Hi, Rina," I mumbled, trying to shove my suitcase under the bed. I'd unpack my clothes later on in the day, right now I just wanted to have the comfort of being able to talk to my best friend.
I could see her in my head, sprawled across her bed with the phone beside her, picking at the flecks of paint that were never absent from her fingers.
"Soooo," she began, and I already knew where this was going. She had that same tone she would always use whenever she asked me how my day went.
"How is everything going? How is your first day at university? Have you made any new friends who could potentially replace me?"
I rolled my eyes with a grin, setting down my toiletries bag and sitting down on my bed.
"Rina, don't be so dramatic. Nobody's gonna replace you, besides, I've literally spoken to three people so far, one of them the lady who gives you the room keys, and the others two girls who mixed up our room numbers, and were trying to unlock the door with their key."
She paused. "Good to know, but go out and make friends. You're the one that's always going on about how I shouldn't hate other humans so much. Besides, if you already know them, there's a better chance that I might be able to make friends with them."
"Rina, I'm gonna go! I've only been here like two hours. And you'll be fine, don't worry."
She sighed on the other end. "I don't want to go to university, I wish I could stay in high school a little longer."
"Yeah, it really wasn't that bad, was it?" I smiled, fondly remembering all the memories I had made with my friends.
I had quite a few of them at my school in the final years, most of them older to me, but in the senior year there were only two of us out of our friend group left.
It wasn't all that bad though, since the boys would always be at one anothers' house and we would meet almost every week, and my girl friends, though we weren't as close, were still super supportive and fun to be with.
It also didn't help that one of the girls I was closest to at school was the girlfriend of one of my best friends. And when they broke up, you can imagine just how awkward it got.
I always had Rina, though, for which I was beyond grateful.
We talked a little while longer while I finally got everything in place.
