time heals all wounds. that's what people are told every counseling session after they lose someone special to them. time has the capability to mend the pulsating pain, until it is only a dull ache that reminds them of what they have gone through. but what if every time they finally felt like things were going to be okay, another catastrophe is hurled their way, forcing them to start the healing process all over again.
it had been an awful day for derek hale. again, someone he had held close to his heart had been ripped from his grasp. it was almost like he was never meant to be happy.
they say when you lose someone dear to you, you feel an overwhelming amount of pain. that your chest tightens to the point where it's painful to breathe, and that your head pounds until your eyesight blurs. it wasn't what derek was feeling. maybe some time ago, he had felt it when he watched the glow leave paige's eyes, but now he felt almost compleatly phlegmatic, except for the soft pang of pain. numb and guilty. people say that the amount of pain you experience when your loved one leaves you is equivalent to how much you cared for them. with the amount of pain he was going through now, or the lack of, anyone could make a case that he never cared for elena. that everything he had with her was just a game to amuse him, but it was nothing close to an act.
cora had been crying since derek had come home, his arms covered in blood. nothing would console her racking sobs. at the age of 8 she couldn't fully grasp the concept of death, but she knew that the only person who was willing to carry her so she could reach the top shelf of the pantry, would never be around anymore.
but derek, hadn't shed a single tear. his face was completely dry as he lay in his bed sheets. the same sheets she had been lying in, just the night before. laughing at the corny pick up lines he used, the ones that he was sure would make her giggle. laughing as if it wasn't one of the last nights of her life. it was only yesterday when she was wrapped in his arms watching the lame cop shows that played at the latest time of night, when only a sliver of the moon could be seen behind the dark clouds that blanketed the sky. it was just yesterday when she has grabbed his hand and dragged him across town, wanting to show him something she had discovered when she was younger.
derek wanted all his memories of her to be more than just a echo of the past. he wanted her to be there for the early morning coffee runs he'd have in the future, the coffee runs that would be the only reason she'd get out of bed. he wished that elena was still here beside him, here to tell him that everything was going to be okay. but she wasn't.
