EBOTT CHILDRENS ORPHANAGE. JANURARY, ??th, ????

The wind howled and whipped against the walls of the bedroom they shared with a few of their younger peers, thunder rumbling, almost purring, getting ever so close each passing second, yet they couldn't sleep. Not because of the thunder, or the rain, or even the wind, But instead their mind grew restless, manic even, thoughts swarming their head like bees to their nest. Suddenly their focus shifted to the window on the other side of the room, curtains partially pulled open as their eyes settled onto the looming, almost mocking figure of the mountain in the distance.

Mt.Ebott.

Famous for it's folklores and stories of monsters and wars, it was one of the more well known places around the area, children always being told not to go near in fear of never being seen again. Often people took that very seriously, though there had been several cases of people, usually children, getting too curious and wandering up the old rock and vanishing, Never to be found again, the elderly often sneered and spread talk that the mountain targetted those who were either, stupid, naughty children or the cowards, maybe all three.

They gave a short huff, eyes narrowing in distaste at the thought as they slowly crept out of their bed, carefully stepping around the room as to not wake the others, and soon enough they were in front of the window, glaring at the mountain. For some reason, they couldn't look away, their thoughts returning once again, whispering and begging to climb Mt.Ebott and oddly enough, they listened, not like they had anything to lose anymore and the appeal was strong, the longer they looked the more they wanted, needed to go up there, thoughts clouding their better judgement.

"How the fuck am I gonna do this?" they hissed under their breath, looking around the room for anything that could help, noticing the old closet door slightly open.

"Blankets could be useful, No way am I sneaking downstairs to get actual rope, so might as well be creative." they noted to themselves, swiftly and silently making their way to the closet in the room, gently prying it open and grabbing as many blankets as they could and began tying them up once they got back to the window, one of the children stirring, one of the younger ones, smart, observant and the ever so bubbly Emil.

"[Name]? what are you doing? 's too late to be awake." she mumbled, the child's voice soft and tired as the older sighed. "Go back to sleep, Emil. I'm just gonna go get some water, okay? Get some rest, you'll need it for tomorrow." [Name] cooed gently, watching as Emil hummed in response and drifted off again.

"That was way too close." they mumbled to themselves, sighing as they began to pack their old backpack with things they'd need, their scarf, extra snacks, water bottle, notebook, pen, some extra clothes and a torch. Once they were done, they headed back to the window again, looking back at the other sleeping children and frowning, "I'm sorry." they whispered as they opened the large window, feeling the cold wind hit their face.

This was it, they were going and they weren't planning on coming back.

[Name] tied the blankets to one of the posts nearby, thick and sturdy enough to handle [Name]'s weight as they slowly began the decent down, the rain hitting them as their feet eventually touched the rain soaked ground and [Name] began their walk towards the rocky giant.

Hours passed and the thunder had stopped, warmth begining to spread around, sun peeking over the trees as [Name] slumped over onto their knees, their breath uneven as they coughed.

They had made it.

After a while of catching their breath, [Name] stood up, wobbling as they gently walked over to the jaws of the mountain, the hole large and didn't seem to have a bottom. They blinked, beads of sweat forming on their forehead, it was too late to back out now, and the soft hum emitting from below was so sweet, so tempting with the promise of redemption, how could [Name] say no?
