The voice in my head, usually so calm and controlled, was now screaming at me to run. The people around me don't know what happened, hopefully never will. I can't let them see the shadow of doubt, fear, and anger in my eyes. I close them, trying to calm down. If they knew then they might blame me for Alex's death. After all, I'm the reason he got killed.
The shadow demons had found out I chose to live with humans instead of in the shadow realm and when they went after me, Alex, my boyfriend, and I had been hiking in the forest near my parent's house, around 5 in the afternoon. Headed back towards home, it was getting dark out, so we never knew what was happening until it was too late. We both heard the gathering of energy usually given off by a shadow demon, but Alex moved first. Without even understanding what the noise was he grabbed me and threw me towards a tree just as the blast hit him. Struggling for breath, he dropped to the ground. I raced towards him, grabbing him and begging for him to stay with me. Stuttering uncontrollably, I started talking about what the shadow demons were and why they wanted me gone. But I knew what would happen next and, soon enough, he was dead.
I looked around and spotted the shadow demon just as it ran away. Losing Alex would be more painful to me than losing my own life and it could sense that. I had already lost enough, why him too? Everything became a blur as my eyes filled with tears, grief taking over. I stood up, my wings unfurling.
"I'm sorry Alex," I said as I flew away, not daring to look back, dreading seeing Alex's dead body once again as it lay in the cold. Alone.
