It was a warm summer night, the teenagers of San Diego high flooding into the local drive-in theater. The smell of nachos and low budget popcorn wafting through the air, that aroma had always graced the theater on busy nights like this. Cars has honestly pilled onto of each other, it was incredibly crowded on June 19th 1961, school had just gotten out and everyone was finding different ways to celebrate. Some kids went down to Sal's diner to share a milkshake or two with a friend, some kids had gone to the nearest club to make bad choices, and some kids had decided to watch a re-run of 'La Dolce Vita' at said theater.
One of the many teenagers that were there that night was named Mia, a smart girl really. Too smart to currently be in a car with Grayson Peers, she had only agreed to the date because anything was better than being at home right now. She'd rather sit in a parking lot with a bunch of sweaty teens than spend another minuet in that hell hole she called home, the boy had been trying to get with Mia for month now. He was incapable of taking the hint that she just wasn't interested, even though she'd told him that several times. Maybe going on one date with this bozo from New York will finally get him off her back.
Mia pushes one of the golden curls out of her pale blue eyes and starts to twirl it, she played with one of her shoulder length curls whenever she was unbelievably bored. She couldn't even enjoy the movie with the sound of Grayson desperation echoing in her ears, "You look amazin tonight Mia, ya really do." Grayson huffed out, giving a attempt at a charming smile. She looks over to him, it was one of the first times all night that she had spoken "Thanks..." she shot him and awkward smile then looked back to the screen.
"Uhu, no problem" He smiled to himself with a cheeky grin then looked down to his watch "9:23" it read. Grayson's parents had asked that he be home by ten maybe pushing it to "10:30" and if it was any later that he should call them. To Grayson's knowledge this was the best date he'd ever had, he was having an amazing time watching a movie with a very pretty and sweet girl from school. He wanted this date to last forever, so he knew he had to rush to the nearest pay phone and call his father, he looks over to Mia "Hey ya hungry?", she drew her attention over to him "I could eat" she says. "Why don't ya go over to that there concession stand while I make a quick phone call?" He hands her a ten dollar bill near the end of his sentence. She takes the money in his hand gently, while making eye contact she says "Sure", "Nice, we'll meet back here in ten" he smiles at her and hops out of the car dashing over to the nearest phone booth.
She roles her eyes and hops out of the vehicle, grabbing her purse before slamming the door behind her. This date was awful but it didn't even come close to the torment she experienced at home, walking over to the concession stand she only has one thought in her mind. "Could this date get any worse?".
Emilio wasn't paying much attention to the movie, he couldn't pay attention with conversation Sasha was having next to him. She was casually giggling and twirling her amber hair looking up to the man leaning on her car door. Emilio looks over to Sasha and runs his fingers through his midnight sky colored mullet, "So, how are you liking the movie?" he gives the back of her head a soft smile. Emilio could have not been in that car and there would be no difference, he frowns at her silence to his question and averts his attention back to the screen. "So me and the boys are headin over to the diner, you commin?" the boy above her asked, "Oh of course Danny!". She picks up her purse and reaches for the door handle, she then looks over to Emilio "You're okay with me leavin right Emilio?", he looks over to her plastering on a smile "Yeah, sure. I'll see you at school Monday". She smiles, grabs her purse and opens the door "Great! See ya!", she steps out of the car and closes the door behind her.
Emilio sighs as he watches Sasha walk away with another man, he takes his glasses off and kneads the through the hem of his shirt. Looking around his car he grabs his wallet and gets out of the car, "I'm not wasting this night." he says to himself as he slams the car in anger. Emilio had been so exited for this date, for Sasha to ditch him halfway through crushed him. He looks down to his car door, balling his fist up, a voice echoes in the back of his head "Why didn't you do anything?". He curses himself replaying the scenario over and over again in his mind, taking a deep breath he looks toward the concession stand. He shrugs and thinks to himself "Might as well get something to eat, might make this night better.".
