Toby Mullins wasn't an idiot, he knew the world was harsh but he had never really been exposed to that side of it. He lliked to savour each moment he got, he savoured each sunset and each drop of rain. So maybe he was a romantic at heart, he loved to see the world as it should be not as it was and yes, it was a view that was slightly obscured by rose tinted glasses but he didn't let himself live that lie.
Macy Davis also wasn't an idiot but she had learned very quickly that being a romantic at heart would only lead to vunerability and heartbreak. She appreciated the occasional sunset but hated the rain. She saw the world as it was, not as it should be and rose tinted glasses were a luxury that she wasn't allowed.
Toby thought life was about experience and new things, Macy knew that life was about living and moving to keep up with life. Toby wanted to travel the world and take the time to smell the roses, Macy also wanted to travel the world but she had no time to stop and smell the roses.
She was strong, stronger than he was anyway. She could resist the temptations that broke his resolve, another doughnut, one more hour in bed, one more kiss, one more lingering touch and one more moment alone together.
He fell hard and fast, she never fell for anyone or so it seemed. He loved everyone in his life unconditionally whereas she kept a wall between herself and the world. He was the light in the dark and she was the dark within the light.
He loved meeting new people and opening up to people, she hated social situations and getting close to people. But she let him in and, he fell fast as she fell hard, he left her without a word. She would often sigh when his name came up and she would say "I cared too much. My mistake."
