"What's kicking Macy Gray?" Toby asked, grinning as he leant against the lockers next to the curly haired girl who was the only one to put up with his bullshit. She rolled her eyes at the name and shut her locker.
"You don't even like her Mullins, and who are you, my grandfather?" She quipped, walking out of the school doors, books in hand. Toby jogged to catch up with the tiny spitfire.
" Well just calling you Macy or Mace is boring and you're not a protective spray." He complained as they got into his car. Macy rolled her eyes again, one of her little quirks that reared its head when she didn't want to grace a person with a response or she couldn't think of anything witty at that exact moment.
"Can't you just call me by my name and be done with it? If you dont, I'll start calling you Toe again." She threatened as she threw her books on the back seat.
"Fine, I'll call you Bea, cause it's your middle name and cause you're b.e.a.uuutiful." He winked at her as he pulled out of the busy parking lot. He saw Macy's cheeks flush pink for a moment, but her face set into a scowl when he laughed and she turned the radio on, determind to ignore him for the rest of the journey.

Toby's parents were not around very often, his dad was an architect who managed huge projects such as ones in China and his mom was an art gallery curator who was always in search of new art to put up in her gallery so they travelled a lot but this didn't mean that they didn't have a great relationship. The three of them were as close as family could be and Toby was equally as close with his two older siblings, the twins Zoë and Xavier.
He often pittied Macy, she was an only child with parents who wanted her to be a model child and for her to go to Harvard to study Law. Macy was a gifted artist and photographer but her parents couldn't see her making a living. He and Macy had spent hours drawing up designs, well Macy had drawn and Toby had provided snacks, of her gallery and the rooms. Even Toby's parents had helped, his dad had proposed different design angles for the building and his mom had set out room for specific moods.
Toby often tried to talk to Macy about her parents and why they had such a narrow view of the world but the topic would shut her down, a reaction Toby had realised was default whenever her parents came into conversation, or Harvard, or even Law. She wasn't one for opening up to people, Toby had told her everything but she still held things back from him. There were rumours about Macy, some more believable than others but she never gave any indication to whether they were true or not. She was quirky, there was no other word for it, and she embraced it. Her curly chocolate/blodne hair sat softly on her shoulders with small braids and beads scattered throughout. She was more inclined to a loose fitting, bohemian clothes, long patterned trousers and shirts, lots of rings and fringes. Toby's favourite part of Macy was her tongue, sharp as a knife and slick as silver. Zoë often called her Macy Silvertongue and the complient made her glow with pride. Macy was small, she could have only just reached 5'5 in heels, so she made up for it with her personality and quick wit.
Macy didn't see the need for apology, nor did she see the need for sugar coating things so she was often very blunt and unapologetic in most things. Her personality could be considered an aquired taste and she didn't care, most things she did weren't very subtle but she often said the same about how they first met when Toby came crashing through a window. He was being chased by a large dog and he ended up tripping over a lady's bag, faling into the shop window of the art supply store that Macy worked in. The part of the window he fell into had been hammered by small rocks over the years and was severly weakened so when the entire 6 foot 2 feet mass of human known as Toby Mullins fell into it, it cracked under the pressure and the entire shop window shattered. It was then Macy called the manager and the local authorities arrived, Toby then began talking his way out of trouble as Macy watched the tall blonde boy before her smoothly talk to the police and she knew that he screamed trouble but she couldn't help herself.
It was then, the peculiar frienship between the two began and Toby began the task of solving the puzzle that was the small girl with the large personality names Macy Beatrice Olivia Davis without her actually realising.
