I was awakened by a large bang. I glared up at the ceiling before closing my eyes and resting my head upon the pillow once again, and tried to sleep.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

I grunted loudly and lifted my duvet to enter the cold abyss of my room. I practically ripped open my door and clambered to my creators.

Knock, knock.

The door opened to reveal my fatigued mother who was rubbing her eyes forcefully. She was wearing a pink eye mask on her forehead and a purple dressing gown.

"Victoria, it's 2:30am," she whispered to me in a croaky voice. "What's the matter?"

My left eyebrow furrowed and stared at her curiously as I questioned why she had been able to sleep through the noise.

"Didn't you hear that?" I asked her in a way that sounded like the simplest question in the world.

My mother stuck her head out of her bedroom to gaze around the hallway. I watched her emerald eyes slowly drift around until they came to meet my eyes again.

"Hear what, dear?" She spoke to me in a tone so soft, it was like I was a lost child in a supermarket.

"The banging..." I began to replay the memory to recall what I heard only 10 minutes ago. "It sounded like it was upstairs; is father up there?"

My mother squinted her eyes to show her confusion and eased open the door a little more to reveal my father fast asleep upon the bed. My eyes widened in shock.

"Are you sure you weren't dreaming, darling?"

I stopped for a moment then stared towards the ground.

"Maybe...sorry for waking you, mother."

She closed the door delicately to make the least amount of noise and I dragged my legs back to my room.

I knew I wasn't dreaming though. It felt too real.

A thought struck me like a lightning bolt. Sam.

I darted up at the speed of light to the attic to find only a few cardboard boxes knocked over with a few repair tools within them.

Who had knocked them?

My hand slid down the hand rail as I climbed down the stairs to my room and I sighed a breath of relief when I saw Sam sound asleep like a baby cuddled up in his bed.

I rested my body upon the silky sheets and closed my eyelids until I was struck with realisation.

I still didn't know who was upstairs.
