Part 2:
"Oji-san look! I made a pyramid with the tinned tomatoes!" Akio beamed happily and Ukai gave an impressed nod
"Not bad Akio, I'm sure the customers would love the display... if only you didn't make it on the floor, in the middle of the aisle..." He muttered, rubbing the back of his neck, looking at the display the boy made on the tiled floor...
"You're gonna have to stock them back on that shelf okay?"
Akio whined, but Ukai shrugged
"Tomorrow you can make a more colourful pyramid on the counter, so whenever customers walk in, it'll be the first thing they see."
Akio seemed to like that idea, quickly staking the lower shelf before rushing back to Ukai
"Oji-san, now what should I do?"
Ukai sighed, there wasn't really much a nine-year-old could do for him...
"It'd be great if you knew accounting..." Ukai muttered before stretching his back
"What's that?"
"Nevermind, do you have any homework to do?" He asked and Akio nodded,
"Alright, get started on it then." Ukai said but a look of reluctance appeared on Akio's face, looking at his feet
"...don't wanna do it..."
Ukai raised a brow... He'd been looking after Akio for weeks now... There wasn't much progress with Y/n but she was always exhausted by the time her shift ended. Their conversations were always short and sweet, with Ukai letting her go each night without asking her out on a date...
He had no idea how to approach her really... it never seemed like the right time... His relationship with Akio, however... Ukai really enjoyed having a little helper around. The kid wasn't rude or obnoxious, he never complained about anything. All he did was follow Ukai around the shop, trying to be of use or get a praise from the older man.
"Come on, if you finish it now... Then you'll be able to play your video game at home. I'll help you out so show me what you gotta do"
Akio glumly opened his bag, looking for his workbook before flopping it onto the counter, sitting on the stool. Ukai was bored, leaning over the counter, watching Akio flip the pages until he stopped.
"So, what do you have to do? Is it math? I know I hated math when I was in school..." Ukai grimaced, remembering how bad he was at the subject... Akio just shrugged and the older man felt like he was behaving when he first met him... He looked guilty and upset...
"Whats wrong bud?" Ukai asked and Akio's eyes were downcast, staring at the notebook
"Father's Day is coming up and we have to write an essay about Otosan..."
Ukai raised a brow,
'No wonder the kids upset...'
He had been taking care of Akio for around a month now, he never mentioned his father or did Y/n... But Ukai didn't want to pry on her divorce... He wasn't sure what to do in this moment, but a father was a father... Akio couldn't neglect his own, even if he was a bad parent.
"You don't want to do it?"
Akio nodded and Ukai just patted his back
"Alright, you don't have to write it now, but you have to do it sooner or later..."
Akio began playing with his fingers, fiddling with the yellow pencil between them, his bottom lip jutting out. Ukai felt his heart squeeze when he noticed how his lip began quivering.
