My eyes flutter open and look around my room. Curtains torn, dresser drawers thrown around the room, cocaine staining the dark blue carpet, pills scattered everywhere, alcohol bottles broken. I sit up and instantly regret it. My hands shoot up to my head and cradle it hoping that the pounding feeling would go away. What happened last night?
There is a soft knock at my door and it slowly opens. My mom peers inside the room and gasps. She opens the door all the way and runs inside towards me. When I'm preparing for her to yell she doesn't. She pulls me into a tight embrace and sobs. "What happened to my sweet Addison?" she cries while stroking my hair. My face holds no emotion. I won't show emotion. I refuse.
"William! Get up here now!" my mom calls to my younger brother. Within a few moments William is standing outside my door with his jaw dropped to the floor. "Call 911." my mom orders. My eyes widen as I struggle to get away from my mom's grasp. "No!" I screech. "Let me go!" Her grip on me only tightens and a single tear rolls down my cheek. "You're going to get help baby. I promise." I didn't want help. I didn't want this. At that point I did something I would regret. I hit my mom in the nose with my elbow and I heard a spine chilling snap. My mom screamed and blood slowly poured down her nose. "I'm sorry..." I whisper and run to my window. I open it and swing one leg over, then the next. I look back and saw my brother coming towards my window. I take a deep breath and jump. The last thing I hear are my brothers shouts and police sirens before I hit the ground. That should get rid of that headache.
~~~
The steady beep of a machine awakens me. I try to move but I can't. My body is in a cast. I begin to panic and try to scream but nothing comes out. My breathing picks up pace and my eyes frantically dart around the room. I see doctors rushing toward me and checking on me. One grabs my face and another uses a flashlight to look in my eyes. A nurse comes in and taps a syringe. Oh boy. She shoves the doctors out of the way and injects the syringe into my neck. Instantly I feel warm and fuzzy. Almost as if I have been drinking. My eyes start to droop as my breathing calms and I fall into darkness.
~~~
I wake up again, except I'm in my house, in my bed. I sit up and look around. Everything was exactly how it was before my brother called 911 and I jumped out the window. I get up and walk over to. The cocaine smashed into the carpet. I kneel next to it and pick up a little plastic baggy and sweep what's left of it into the bag. After I zip the bag I hide it in the slit in my mattress where mom would never find it. I then pick up the broken glass with my hands and throw it in the garbage.I guess all of that was a dream, other than getting high as heaven last night. Just as I finish cleaning up my mom walks in. "Addison it's time for school. I will drive you today so you don't have to walk." She eyes me up and down and rolls her eyes. "You aren't even ready yet? Get dressed and meet me downstairs in 15 minutes." With that she walks out of my room and closes the door behind her. I sigh and walk over to the pile of clothes I have lying on the floor and just pick up a pair of dark wash skinny jeans and an all blue sweatshirt. I get dressed and head downstairs, not really caring about my hygiene.
I grab my backpack at the bottom of the stairs and mumble as I make my way out the door and to my mom's car. Her and my brother are already inside. I open the door and get in, slamming the door behind me. My mom sighs and pulls out of the driveway. Nobody speaks a word the whole way. Only a few coughs here and there. When we get to the high school I open the door and jump out. "Bye Addison. I love you." my mom says. I just nod and close the door. I stand there for a few moments until I hear the car speed off. I see a group of populars walk by and gossip about Dean dating some blonde haired geek. Gracie.
I haven't even took one step before my best friend, Gracie, comes running towards me with a big smile on her face. Let me guess, she's finally dating Dean like those populars said. "OMG Addy! Guess what!" A small smile tugs at my lips and I shrug. "Hmmm I don't know Gracie. My guessing isn't so accurate today but I will give it a shot. Are you dating Dean?" Now time for the best part. Her jaw drops open and I chuckle. "You liar! You have the best guessing skills today!" I roll my eyes and grab her arm. "Come on. Let's get to first period."
We enter the school and head to our lockers. After we switch out our books we head to first hour, which is Spanish. As we walk into the classroom all the girls glare at Gracie and she doesn't seem to notice. She was too busy blabbing about Dean. We took our usual seats in the back corner. I looked around and noticed only one girl was glaring now. Kelsey Evans. Dean's ex girlfriend. I rolled my eyes and spoke up. "Take a picture Kelsey. It will last longer." She made that whatever face she always makes and flips her hair and turns to the front. I smirk and Gracie taps my shoulder. "Hey Addy. Who is that hottie!?" She points to some random guy walking into the classroom and heading towards the back. The seat next to mine. That's just dandy! I was never great with people and communication skills.
He took a seat next to me and smiled at me. I studied him carefully. Long brown hair, pale face, deep green eyes. Everything about this guy would make any girl go psycho. But I'm not any girl. "Hello?" It took me a minute to realize that he was waving his hand in front of my face. "Oh." I replied lamely. "Hi."
"I'm Oliver. What's your name?" I think for a moment. Should I really tell this guy my name? Well it would be the nice thing to do. But who said I was nice?
"Addison. But my friends call me-" Before I could finish my sentence Gracie leaned over and practically yelled,"ADDY! Can I borrow a pencil?" I lifted an eyebrow at her and said,"I don't even have my own pencils. You think I would have one for you?" She nodded. "I guess your right."
A few minutes later the teacher walked in and began passing out out tests from last week. The moment she reached my desk I knew that I had an F just by the look she gave me. She slapped my paper on my desk and clicked away on her heels. I glanced down at my paper but it wasn't what I was expecting. It was a D-! This is an improvement. My mom will be so proud.
We went over our tests for about half the hour and then for the other half we watched a video on some Spanish stuff that I payed no attention to. I was doodling on the back of my hand with black permanent marker when the teacher put her hand on my desk and clicked her red nails against my desk. May I add that her nails were as long and sharp as a python's tooth.
"Hand me the marker Addison." I sighed and slowly handed her the marker. Damn it, this was the fifth time this month she took my marker. "You can have this back at the end of class." I rolled my eyes and rested my cheek on my hand. My eyes looked over to the clock and we had 30 seconds of class left. I sat up straighter with my books in hand, ready to leave my least favorite class. I watched the clock for the rest of the time and then the bell rang. I sprung up from my seat and walked to the teacher's desk and snatched my marker. Before she could say anything I left the class and walked to my next class.
Halfway to my next class someone grabbed my shoulder and stopped me. I slowly turned around, ready to kill whoever touched me. It was just that new kid, Oliver. I have him a 'move your hand off of my shoulder or I will kill you' look and he immediately removed his hand. "So Addison, you have Algebra next, right?" I nodded. "Great! We can walk together! Wait can I see your schedule?" I gave him a confused look and gave him my schedule. His face lit up and he handed my schedule back."We have all of our classes together! Now you can show me around here!" Great, I thought. Fun.
I walked to my next class knowing that Oliver was following. This was going to be a long day.
