30 more minutes until your shift was over, you were ecstatic, you really needed to start driving to Tuscaloosa before it got dark. You needed it to be light out so you could find the entrance to the abandoned building Jay was shot in. Today you were going to determine if it was possible for Jay to have exited the building by the time the police got there.
"They really should be paying me to research this case, I mean, I'm doing more work than the police did for this. Hell, they're not even looking into it further." You sighed, picking up your coffee.
"What'd you say?" You turned around quickly, spilling coffee all over Jessica. Jessica yelped in pain before laughing at your carelessness.
"Shit! Sorry Jessica! Here let me help you."
"No need," Jessica said as she grabbed tissues off of your desk and began wiping coffee off of her, "Hey why are you even drinking coffee this late anyways? It's almost 5pm, that stuff would keep me awake another 15 hours."
"Well, that's good I probably need to be up another 15 hours." You laughed, throwing away your now empty coffee cup.
"What? Why?"
"Oh, I uh, just have so much paperwork I need to catch up on because you know how much I procrastinate at work." You nervously laughed.
You didn't know if you wanted to tell Jessica what you were up to, you didn't want to reel her into your crazy investigation into if Jay was still alive, and what really happened in Tuscaloosa. You also didn't know if you could trust her, and you didn't know if she even remembered anything from back when she lived in Tuscaloosa. You've asked her a couple questions before, and she didn't seem to remember much. You once asked her what she thought happened to Jay and she just told you he moved, after that you didn't really ask her any more questions because it seemed like she knew less than you did.
"Yeah, you do procrastinate a lot," Jessica continued, "Sometimes I look over at you from my desk and you're just sitting there staring at the wall. What's that about?" She laughed.
"Hey! I'm just staring off into space, I don't see what the big issue is." You said rolling your eyes with a smile.
"Only the fact that I have to do twice as much work because you slack off."
"I'm sorry, I just get so distracted sometimes. Hey, look at the bright side though, I'm taking some work home with me tonight that way you won't have to do as much!"
Jessica laughed, "Thanks (Y/N) even though you do slack off, sometimes you are helpful."
"I'm choosing to take that as a sincere compliment." You both laughed.
"Alright I'll let you get back to 'work'." Jessica said doing air quotes.
You laughed rolling your eyes and watching Jessica walk back to her desk. You then felt your phone buzz in your pocket, and you took it out to look at it. It was a text from Tim.
"Your shifts over at 5 correct?" You responded with a quick 'Yeah.'
"Alright I'm heading over to your place now, I'll see you when you get home."
"Wait why?" You groaned trying to come up with an excuse as to why you couldn't see him.
"Haven't seen you in a while. Also no excuses I know they're bullshit. I still have your house key so I'll just let myself in."
"You're creepy :)" You smiled, putting your phone back into your pocket.
Honestly you really did need a break from trying to figure out what all happened in Tuscaloosa, and Tim was right, you hadn't seen him in a while. He was your best friend, and at this point one of your only friends because you spent so much time back in Tuscaloosa trying to piece things together. You would also have more time to catch up on work tonight since you wouldn't be driving there. After deciding you weren't going to try to shoo Tim away, you headed back to your desk collecting everything you needed to take home. After that, you went to clock out.
