"Nandini kanna, wake up."

Nandini turned in her bed and hugged her Amms, who had come to wake up.

"Good morning Amms." She muttered into her grandmother's lap.

Amms, who was trying hard to not think about how big her little Nandu has become, couldn't control her tears.

"Kanna, wake up!"

"Amms...time?"

"4 in the morning kanna."

"Amms, why so early?"

"It is a good habit, kanna. It will help you in future. Now wake up!"

Seven year old Nandini got up from the bed. She rubbed her eyes and looked at her 4 year old brother. She kissed his cheek and stood up.

"Let's brush your teeth, come." Amms said softly.

Nandini stopped in her tracks when she saw her parents' photo on the wall, with garlands.

"When will Amma Appa come back Amms?"

"Soon kanna...come." Amms said, trying not to think about the recent unfortunate incident.

It was the same room, 18 years later. The same photo hung there, but there was no more mourning.

Nandini sat up on the bed.

"Time Amms?"

"4 in the morning kanna." Amms said and patted Nandini's head, pushing hair back gently.

"Why so early Amms? Haldi is at 7 na?"

"We have to go to the temple na! Go, brush your teeth and take a bath." Amms said.

"Okay."

She got up and her eyes landed on her parents' photo.

"Are they watching me Amms? Will they bless Manik and me?" Nandini asked, tracing her finger along the edge of the photograph.

"Their blessings are always with you."

Nandini nodded and went to the bathroom, while Amms sat with a sad smile, thinking about how times had changed.

"Oh my god! Kunal mama!"

"Nandu beta!"

Nandini hugged her uncle, her mother's sibling. The only relative she was still in touch with, from her mother's side.

"You look so pretty!"

"Thank you mama! I thought you won't make it to Mangalore." Nandini said.

"I had to, for my dear niece! Where's Rishu?"

"He's at the beach, supervising the work. Let's go." Nandini dragged her uncle.

"Ek minute. Sameera! Come in fast!" Kunal called for his wife.

"Yes yes! Nandini, here you are." Sameera side-hugged Nandini.

"Hey Didi!" A teenager greeted her.

"Oh my god Rohan, you look really different, I just met you like four years ago." Nandini said, hugging her cousin.

"I was a kid back then." He laughed.

"Yes yes. Rishabh would love to see you, come y'all."

Nandini led her relatives to the beach, where the work for the mandap was going on. All the men were instructing the workers.
