"This is so cool!" Keefe gushes as we walk into the fair.
"You kids can have fun, we will be around you guys," Ro says.
Keefe grabs my hand and we make our way to a ride.
"What's that?" Keefe asks pointing to a ride.
"It's called a ride. That one specifically takes you around in circles, it's scary," I say.
"Okay, we are going on that one first," he says.
"What, no. You can go on it, I'll watch from down here," I say pulling my hand away.
Keefe comes closer to me, making me blush. He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear.
"I'll be right next to you, you don't need to be scared," he says gently holding my hands again.
I don't know what comes over me but I nod, and we go on the ride. The whole time my eyes were closed but I felt his hand intertwined with mine the whole time. He never let go. He didn't let go on any of the rides either. I've been having a strange feeling all night, I can't explain it.
"What's that fluffy thing, it looks like a cloud?"
I smile. "That's cotton candy, it tastes good."
I buy some for us and he tries to shove the whole thing in his mouth. His eyes go wide.
"It melts!" he says with his mouth full.
I can't help but giggle. My eyes travel to some girls looking over at us. Their eyes are glued on Keefe. I don't blame them, he looks like a supermodel. But for some reason, my heart twists. I grab Keefe's hand and lead him out of there.
"Let's go on the circle thing," he says.
"Uh, I don't know it goes pretty high," I say.
"I promised you everything will be alright, I'm here to protect you. You trust me right?" He asks me staring into my soul.
My face goes red and I push him away from me a little. "Yeah, whatever, let's go."
I hide behind my hair as he leads us to the ferris wheel. When we get on, I start to get nervous but the cool air calms me down. There's a slight breeze hitting my face, causing my hair to fly back a little. Keefe looks out the seating area down on the ground. I can tell he's having fun. We stop at the top. I look up into the starry night.
"It's beautiful," I say amazed by how many stars are out.
"Yeah," I hear him say.
I look to his eyes and see him staring at me. He's not even looking at the sky. I know my face is tomato again but I don't look away from those piercing ice blue eyes.
"I'm suprised Gigantor let you out of his grip," Keefe says leaning back.
I almost forgot about them here. Things felt too normal.
"Yeah, same with Ro," I say reminding him.
He groans. "It feels good to be out of that house for a little bit," he says looking around.
"I'm sorry about what happened back home," I say.
He smirks. "Looks like you're not the only one with beef with the council."
I shake my head. "It's not something to be proud of Keefe, this is serious."
He sighs and his smirk slowly leaves his face. "I know Foster. I guess I'm just lucky to have you."
At this, both our cheeks are tinted. "Thank you," he says.
"I know you'd do this for me Keefe, I'm not going to leave you alone in a place like this. It's dangerous," I say.
"So you came to make sure that I'd be safe here?" He asks.
"Yeah, why?" I ask confused.
He shakes his head, with a slight look of disappointment on his face. "Nothing."
I don't make the move to say anything else. I feel like he's upset, but why? Maybe because of the whole situation. I messed tonight up, he was supposed to have fun. But I brought the stuff up. I'm such a bad friend. When we get off the ride, I spot Sandor and Ro, with their disguises.
"Let's go," Sandor says.
I think he was expecting us to object because he looked surprised when Keefe and I followed behind him. For the whole journey home, no one talks except Ro, talking about her amoebas.
(Back home)
Keefe immediately started walking up the stairs but before he went out of sight he looked over at me.
"Night Foster," he says giving me a slight smile.
He walks away before I can say anything. I huff and put my head on the table.
"How'd you make hunkyhair upset blondie?" I hear Ro's voice say from behind me.
"I noticed you two weren't talking," Sandor adds.
I exhale. "I honestly don't know, but I messed up guys," I say turning around to face them.
"Tell me what happened," Ro said.
I tell them about the whole day. After I told them what I said in the ferris wheel, they both sigh.
"What?" I ask confused.
"Wow Blondie, I didn't know you were that oblivious," Ro says.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
She shakes her head. "We can't tell you, or else it won't be geniune."
"Unfortunately Miss Foster, I must agree with the ogre," Sandor says.
I roll my eyes. "Whatever, I'll figure it our myself, for now I'm going to go to bed."
Sandor follows me upstairs and searches my room for any threats. Once the coast is clear, I walk in.
"You know Miss Foster," Sandor starts to say while closing the door, "The easiest way to find out why he was upset is just to ask him."
He closes the door, leaving me alone to my thoughts. I can't just ask him. That would be too weird. Also, what if nothing is the matter. What if we are all overthinking this. He could just be tired. We did do a lot of stuff today. I groan and lay down in bed throwing the blanket on top of me. I hold on to Ella and stare out the open window. It's the same stars from earlier.
"Oh, Keefe," I sigh letting the coolness take me to sleep.
