I stand over his mutilated corpse, soaked in blood. Using the knife in my hand and the voices in my head, I rip his chest open, exposing his heart and lungs. At their urging, I rip his heart out and sink my teeth into the blood soaked muscle, tearing off chunks and swallowing them while relishing the taste of blood in my mouth. I am not a serial killer, just someone pushed over the edge. I am Jake Strife, but everyone calls me Dusk. The body at my feet used to be Evan Barnes. I knew Evan very well. Before he became a corpse on my table, he was my girlfriend's ex-boyfriend. He was abusive, demanding, and possessive. When Sara finally left him, she came to the one person who understood: Me. She showed up at my door in tears, begging to let her in. I let her in, seeing the bruises on her arms and face. "He did it again, Dusk. Evan promised that he would never do it again." She said, falling into my arms and sobbing into my chest. I gently lead her to the couch and put her down. "I'll sleep here. You can have my bed." I say. "You are not going back there."
Before Evan started dating Sara, we were best friends. But he told me, "Stay away from Sara and I, Jake." right after they started dating. He wouldn't talk to me or text me. The first time he hit Sara, she brushed it off as an accident. The second time, however, she called the police. Evan was arrested for domestic battery, but was acquitted. The third time, Sara called me. I tried helping her get a restraining order, but she refused. "He gets one more chance. After that, I'm done with him." This was the last straw. "Jake?" Sara asks. "Will you come with me to Evan's apartment? I left most of my things there, and I need them." The fear in her eyes is obvious, so I agree. I get my keys and we drive to Evan's. "He won't open the door for me, so you'll have to get in first." I tell Sara. Looking fearful but determined, she nods.
Sara walks up to Evan's door with me in tow. Before she can fish the keys from her pocket, Evan throws the door open, rattling the frame. "So, you came back." He sneers. "With Jake, too. Why are you here?" I step in front of Sara. "We're here to get her stuff. Just let us get it, and we'll-" Evan punches me in the jaw, cutting me off. I swing back, feeling his nose crack under my fist. He tackles me, throwing us both to the ground. I restrain Evan while I shout, "Get your stuff!" Sara runs inside and gets her laptop and a few other things before running back to my car. I feel Evan struggle, trying to break free and get to Sara. I knee him in the groin, and get up, dashing back to my car and driving off before he gets up.
