Toriel X Sans

Let's submerge into the Tip of the Iceberg.


Character Relationship:
As of the events of Undertale, Toriel and Sans end up being good friends. There are currently no explicit nods that indicate a romantic relationship between these two. Sans met Toriel when he was walking in the forest and he found a large closed door. Sans took it as an opportunity to practice knock knock jokes, and Toriel happened to hear these. They both laughed at each other's jokes for a while, until one day Toriel asked Sans to keep a promise, which was to protect a human if they were to pass by. Sans reluctantly promised because of the value of their short interactions.

Then they met during the True Pacifist Ending, in which they quickly recognized each other and were glad to see each other once more. After this they share some brief exchanges before the end of the route.


Canon Status:
Sans is canonically not in a relationship, and there are no indications that he was in one.

Toriel was married to Asgore, but they broke up due to Asgore vowing to kill any human that fell into the Underground. After this they see each other once more during the True Pacifist Ending, in which Toriel explains that she still strongly feels "disgusted" by Asgore's actions. Currently, she is not in a relationship.


Pros:
-Toriel and Sans both are known to like making puns
-Both of them seem to get along well
-Sans values their interactions as much as to make a promise 

Cons:
-There are very little indications of them liking each other romantically
-Toriel might be much older than Sans
-Being in a relationship with Sans would fully severe both Sans' and Toriel's connections with Asgore
-Sans is heavily implied to have depression, which would not allow him to be in a relationship
-Sans heavily implied that he would have killed the human, which Toriel would not understand


Personal Opinion:
Toriel and Sans would probably end up being very good friends. I compare them to the relationship between Undyne and Papyrus, who despite their differences trust each other a lot. I don't see Sans liking Toriel romantically due to his heavily implied depression, however I do see how they could end up being very good companions.
