"Just stay awake, baby. Please stay awake for us," I beg as I cradle Wren in my arms. Her eyes flutter closed again as she alternates between consciousness and unconsciousness. The gunshot wound continues bleeding, soaking the shirt I'm pressing against her abdomen.
"For fucks sake, Santiago, go faster!" Luca yells from the passenger seat. He looks over his shoulder to look at Wren and me, but I can't tear my attention away from her to meet his eyes. Not even for a second.
"I'm trying!" Santiago yells. "We're almost there. Just hang on for us, principessa. Just one more minute."
"Enzo?" Wren's shaky voice comes out in a whisper.
"I'm right here, baby," I say as tears fill my eyes.
"Promise me you'll smile more," she mumbles.
"I will smile just for you, every day, for the rest of our lives."
"After me," she says.
"After you what?"
"Smile even after me."
"That's never going to happen because you're not going to die. I promise you. You're gonna make it through this."
"I'm so tired," she whispers as a tear falls from her half-open eyes.
"Don't you dare leave us," I say, pressing my forehead to hers as my own tears fall.
The car pulls to a stop in front of the emergency room entrance, and all three of us rush through the doors, Wren still in my arms.
"Gunshot wound! Save her! Now!" Luca yells.
Doctors and nurses swamp us and scoop Wren out of my arms before placing her on a bed and rolling her away. A woman stops us from following once they take her through a set of doors, and the three of us are forced to watch helplessly as the doors close, our girl disappearing behind them.
"We need her. We can't lose her," Luca mumbles. I've never seen him cry before.
"She lost so much blood, what are we going to—"
I cut Santiago off before he can finish the negative question he's asking, "she's a fighter. Our girl is a fighter. She won't leave us."
"Enzo, you have to be realistic," Santiago says softly.
"She won't leave us. She's the strongest person we know. She will come back to us."
But even as I say the words, my heart sinks, because Santiago is right. She lost a lot of blood. We can only hope that she survives. Because if she doesn't—none of us will recover.
