I couldn't remember the last time I felt pain like this before. It was nothing compared to this. It was like my body was burning from the inside out; it was so bad that I couldn't breathe. My eyes snapped open as I struggled to take in air, but it was almost impossible.
It wasn't long before the familiar beeping sound of the heart monitor and the scraping noise of a chair being pushed back filled my ears. I tried to make out the figure that was now staring down at me through foggy vision, feeling their soft hands on my chest as she tried to calm me down a little, but with each passing second, the pain grew as I tried to take another breath.
"Ir...ma..."My voice came out weak as I tried to grab hold of the other female's sleeve.
"Hold on, Pieck. It's okay."
I felt the oxygen mask being placed over my nose and mouth, giving me the supplied air that I desperately needed until my breathing was leveled once again. I managed to put a palm over Irma's hand as I slowly took in breaths as instructed by the doctor, watching her also take in air in unison.
In the last two years that I have known her, I knew that Irma took her job seriously; being the head doctor of her former squad was something she took pride in. I was always impressed by her work, watching her swift and careful movements as she helped as many patients as she could. I couldn't be more proud. But because of her work, I noticed that Irma never shows fear or distress; which makes sense as emotion could distract her from doing precise tasks. But I was able to see it; every last bit of emotion can be seen by my very eyes. If only I wasn't hurting right now, I would spring up and embrace the cute little nurse that I've grown to love.
"Feeling better," Irma asked in a soft voice, her fingers pushing away the lock of hair that covered my eyes. I only nodded, but deep down, I was not feeling any better. "Good. I'll go get you some water."
At that moment, I felt a ping of pain again, but it was different than what was felt earlier. 'No, no, no...don't leave me alone...' My arm quickly shot up to clasp onto her arm, causing her to stop before she could even get off the bed. "Please...stay."
"Pieck..."
I knew Irma couldn't resist my pleas. With my current condition, Irma focused all her attention on me and I couldn't help but feel like a burden. I'm better than this, even in this weakened state. But I don't want to be alone. We don't know what could happen in the last few days that I have and I just can't bare not seeing my beloved by my side.
Irma sighed softly, then sat back down next to me as my eyes followed her movements. She gently took one of my hands and pressed her lips against the knuckles as every bit of discomfort faded and my body relaxed as if every kiss healed me little by little. "Rest. I'll be right here."
The light from the setting sun made Irma stand out a little more, even if she was the only one in the room with me. It was like she was an angel being sent to care for me, and I couldn't be anymore happier to have her. I couldn't help but stare into her dark green eyes until I felt myself eventually fall asleep, squeezing her hand slightly to confirm she was still there.
'I don't know how long we have, but I promise, I'll stay with you until the end.'
