Summer of 1962

Scotty Smalls

There is one all-time greatest moment in the history of sports, and it happened in the 1932 World Series. The story goes that in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, a full count and the trying run on the base, Babe Ruth raised his arm and pointed to the center field bleachers.

No one believed it, because nobody had done it before. But The Babe was calling his shot. On the next pitch, the Great Bambino hit a towering home run. And even although he'd been a hero before that, that's pretty much how he became a legend.

Thirty years later, a kid named Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez. . . became a neighborhood legend. It was the greatest summer of my sister and I's life. . . When he taught me to play baseball, and he became my best friend. And he got me out of the biggest pickle I'd ever been in.

Riley Smalls

The car slowly pulled up to the new house, Riley let out a quiet sigh as her brother, Scotty rested his head on her shoulder. The two of them already missed their friends back home and they weren't sure how they would make new friends with only two weeks before summer break. Riley rested her head on the window looking up at the house as Bill, the siblings new stepfather, pulled into the driveway. The Smalls siblings looked at each other before climbing out of the car, Scotty made his way over to his sister as she adjusted her jacket.

Riley looked over to her brother, "It's not too bad, I guess." Scotty shrugged as the Uhaul truck pulled up to the house. The Smalls siblings began unloading the boxes into the house, Riley had decided on taking the bedroom next to Scotty's rather than away from him. She made her way outside to grab another box when she spotted Scotty waving slightly to one of their neighbors, the mystery boy looked from Scotty to Riley as he smiled kindly to them before he continued walking away. Riley lightly poked her brother and the two continued unloading the truck's contents.

Once they had all their boxes in their separate rooms, Riley started with making her bed above all else knowing that was the most important thing. After that, she hung up her fairy lights on her wall and began hanging up some of her posters which included some of her favourite baseball stars. She set up her desk, placing her favourite novels in a neat pile with her little decor pieces. Majority of the color theme in her room was a light blue, she folded her clothes and put them into her drawers before hanging up her dresses and jackets.

She folded the boxes as she went and fairly soon, she had unpacked all of the boxes and set up her room exactly the same as it was back home. Riley sat down on her bed and let out a slow steady breath before making her way towards Scotty's room, knocking on the door before opening it. "Hey Scotty, need any help?" Riley offered her younger brother. "Thanks Lee, but I'm almost done now," Scotty answered as he adjusted his own desk decor to his own liking. "Okay! I'm gonna go help mom," Riley tells him before closing the door.

Riley went to bed later that night completely drained from the trip and the unpacking of the entire house. She wasn't sure how to feel about the new life she and Scotty have now and on top of that, she wasn't sure how they'd make friends in such a short amount of time before the summer begins. But Riley was sure of one thing, with her little brother Scotty by her side, she was invincible in her own eyes and the two of them would make sure they enjoyed their summer going to the pool, hanging out and playing ball.
