"You must be joking," Alpha Dane sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. I shook my head awkwardly.

"He called me 'Mutt.' It isn't really an insult I receive on a regular basis from humans." I concluded with a nod of my head. Alpha Dane grunted, running a hand through is spiked black hair quickly. He pulled both hands down his face and rubbed the scruff on his chin with yet another sigh.

"Fine. I'll send another security around the perimeter and territory to search for any hunters. I suggest you get to bed, Deryn. You don't have permission to fail school." He said, ruffling my messy curly brown hair. I glared at him and he smirked. "Can't have my nephew lose a chance at a good education, can I?" He asked. Yeah. My Alpha is also my Uncle. Peachy.

"But what if you find something? I can't sleep through it!" Alpha Dane gave me a stare of derision.

"Deryn, you said he broke his nose earlier?" I nodded, "then he most certainly isn't going to be out and about tonight. Now up to bed, before I have to make it an order." He said and I glared at him momentarily before walking up the steps of the Pack House and toward my room amongst the many others. Our pack was one with many attacks so we wanted to keep close and tight-knit. Especially after my parents' murders ten years ago by hunters. My brother and myself were brought into my Uncle's care and he brought the entire pack into one house. Well, basically a mansion, really.

I sighed and shook my head opened the room my brother and I shared. He was lounging across his bed, texting his friends from school. My Uncle was such an instigator. A twelve and a half year old did not need a smartphone. Or a phone in general, really. But Uncle Shawn insisted. I rolled my eyes at my brother again.

"You know, Matt, you could always, oh I dunno, talk to real people. God knows there's over fifty of them in the house." I said. He grunted and shrugged."Who the hell are you even texting?" I asked, exasperated. He glanced at me and then back to the screen of his phone.

"Damien." He stated simply. I sighed. Matt's best friend. He was really sick though. I never really asked very many questions, just whatever Matt said about him.

"How is he?"

"He and his mom are going to San Francisco to get some test done there. He should be back next week." I nodded and looked toward the door as Vic opened it.

"What did Alpha Dane say?" he asked.

"He'll send out another party to scout the territory perimeter, but other than that not very much."

"That doesn't sound like sleeping, Deryn Mackenzie! Vic and Matt! You two go to bed too!" Uncle Shawn--Alpha Dane--shouted up the stairs. Vic jumped and raced to his own room. Matt huffed and sent a final text before setting his phone on the bedside table and turning over in a huffy manner. I frowned. I stood and walked over to him, sitting behind him and tapping his shoulder. He glanced up at me and I could see he was very upset.

"What is it, Mattie?"

"What if Damien has cancer, Der? The doctors haven't gotten the lab results back and...he just keeps getting worse. I mean...what if he dies?" He asked and I couldn't help but frown.

"I'm sure he'll be fine, Matt. You've said he's a fighter and a strong kid. He'll make it."

"You can't be sure about that. Cancer is devastating." I sighed, ruffling Matt's hair.
