Burning tears

"Bethany! Come on you've got more chores to do."

"Ey?" The maid who gave me soup let out a strained breath.

"Don't sigh so openly, it's unbecoming of a maid, and what's with that face? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Suzy the other maid handed Bethany a duster, and began chatting. Completely ignoring the soaking wet princess.

"Bethany, did you hear?"

"Hear what?"

"Hmm should I tell you?" Suzy let out a chuckle."Well..." She continued to chuckle, twirling her hair around her finger.

After Suzy twirled around a bit, Bethany smacked her knees with the feather duster. "Come on now!! Tell me before I lose interest."

"Ok, ok!!" Suzy agreed with an annoyingly playful tone. "Get this, you know that maid? The one that always acts all high and mighty?"

"Hmm...ah yep, lilian, right?"

"Yep!"

"What about her?"

I was only half listening to their conversation, that was until I heard Lilly's name. My heart began to pound, there was something wrong with this, did they mention her because of me? What could have happened to her? I moved an inch closer to the bars. My heart was pounding even louder.

"She's dead! Killed by the Emperor himself!!!" The girl saying nonsense grabbed her chest like she had just told a funny joke.

My heart stopped, it was like getting the air knocked out of me. There was a clattering sound, soup was all over the place. My body was numb, I couldn't feel the spoon, I couldn't even feel the ground below.

I can't hear.
I can't see anything.
It's too loud.
I can't bare it.

The shaking figure of the maid had me feeling sick, she was laughing and pointing. The other had her hands to her mouth, I couldn't see their faces, it was all black, like I was losing sense of what was real.

As the words sunk in I felt a panic run through me. My hands reaching out, expecting to feel lily's touch, the warm touch I'd feel after a bad dream,

but this...this wasn't a dream.

My body gave out. A loud thud echoed throughout the prison.

"I've come to the realization that I am going to die."

There was no point in saying this out loud, but I felt it necessary to truly expect it, plus the little bird who flew in from the window seemed interested in my story, well at least I thought it would be nice to have a last conversation, even with a bird.

I was going to die, if there was going to be a trial I would have been notified, and besides...if there was even a chance that they thought I wasn't guilty, Lily would be alive.

Just thinking about lily caused burning hot tears to flow, trickling down my worn cheeks.

The little bird hopped closer to me, I wondered if it could feel my pain.

The cold and disgusting room no longer bothered me, my anger was too distracting. I hadn't been bothered by those horrible maids since I heard about lily.

"How could this happen? Have I ever done something deserving of this, has Lily? All I've ever wanted was to be loved, is that a crime, is that something to be ashamed of? The true crime is being falsely accused, and condemned."

I couldn't help, but rant to the sweet little bird, it's eyes so inviting.

I could feel the heat of my anger just thinking about it. I've been sad my whole life, sad about my pitiful existence, but how can I be sad when it is not only my life that has been ruined?

My dear lily...I won't cry anymore

I promise.
