Chapter 3

I don’t know what happened. They just showed up, sir, I didn’t call them. They came to my door and got me and then took me to her. We’re on our way back, and she’s glaring at me like I murdered her puppy. Send Elliane to orientate her.

When people knock on your window at three in the morning, it’s disconcerting. Before the Crisis, if someone knocked on my window this early, I’d be disconcerted because it was three in the morning. Now, I’m disconcerted because 1) there’s a national state of emergency and you’re not supposed to leave your house, 2) there’s a 7p.m. to 6a.m. curfew thing, and 3) there’s a national state of emergency and you’re not supposed to leave your house!

So I was jolted awake by two short knocks, and I groggily pulled myself out of bed and over to the window, where I was shocked to find Devon. Only it wasn’t Devon, because Devon had tan skin and blue eyes not pale white skin and- wait, purple eyes?

Nervously, I unlocked the window and slid it up.

“Uh, hi,” I whispered. Devon pulled himself into my room and headed to my closet.

“Devon?” I asked. “What are you doing?”

“You have to come with us.” He said simply. I watched as he pulled down a duffel bag and filled it with underthings, jean shorts, and tees. I joined him and started to add my favorite skirts, but he shook his head.

Disappointed, I waited in my bedroom until he seemed to have gathered everything I needed into a bag, which he handed to me and promptly shoved me out the window.

Before I could even manage a scream, four strong hands latched on to each limb- one on each arm and one on each leg. They lowered me into a vehicle. I could tell it wasn’t a car, but I had not idea what else it could be.

It was far too early for me to be suspicious- instead; I took in the 2 men with purple eyes, dark hair, and shimmering white skin like Devon’s, and then Devon, who had climbed into the vehicle after me.

I yawned and blinked sleepily. One of the men handed me a glass of water, and I chugged it thirstily, hoping it would wake me up. It didn’t. Within seconds, I was falling asleep, and the vehicle was hurtling along, the air pressure was dropping, and dreamland welcomed me.

I woke up to a head splitting ache in my head. I groaned and tried to roll over in my bed- before realizing I wasn’t in my bed.

I hit the floor with a thud, and groaned again. Blinking, I cleared the sleep out of my eyes and surveyed my surroundings. I wasn’t in the vehicle or my bed. Although, I realized I was definitely on a floor. I sat up and rubbed my back. To my left was the ottoman I fell off of. To my right was an archway ringed in a beautiful brown oak wood. In front of me, I made out a few chairs and a sofa around a fireplace.

Rubbing my back again, I slowly stood up and stretched my sore muscles. I could hear faint voices drifting through the archway and tiptoed over to it. Beyond the doorway, another hallway T-ed off and to the left was a doorway. I approached it cautiously.
