I quickly made my way down to the engine room; Seth was usually found fixing something that was often broken by Dr Z around that area. Walking as fast as I could, I made my way there, a slight rising of dread filling my chest. I wouldn't say that Seth scared me, he was just so quiet and you could never tell exactly what he was thinking or feeling. I was nervous, would I anger him if I asked too many questions? What if he isn't in a good mood? I'm sure he could understand my shock, everyone has suddenly woken up in a new time period, in an unknown location, I'm sure he can understand my fear.
Swallowing that fear, I knocked on one of the doors. A low voice answered, "Come in." I cautiously opened the door. Taking several nervous footsteps forward I asked "H-Hey Se-Seth, how is th-the engine Coming alo-along?" I was desperately trying not to embarrass myself in front of him but my stutter thought otherwise. He always seemed so confident in his words, when he spoke, he sounded clear and professional. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous of him. "Still completely broken, we're missing quite a few parts. We aren't able to order any parts for it so we'll probably end up finding and building them ourselves." Not what I was hoping for but what I was expecting. "D-do you need-need any help w-with any-anything?" He paused for a moment. "C-coffee, tea-" He cut me off mid-sentence "Could you tell Dr. Z to meet me here ASAP." "S-Sure! I'll get you some c-coffee on the way back." It might brighten his mood a bit, although no one would notice. "Thank you," he replied, deep down I knew he was happy about it... I think.
I was aware that my legs would ache by the time I got back to the engine room, but I already told Seth that I would get him that coffee, and I didn't want to disappoint him. Making him feel happy felt like an accomplishment, although I enjoyed making anyone feel happy. There was a different feeling when I helped Seth though. He usually seemed so quiet and almost looked sad or annoyed at things. I always loved seeing a small smile creep onto his face when I tried my hardest to make him laugh.
Dr. Z was shouting at Ursula and Zander. I tapped his shoulder and he spun around, ready to start a fight. "What do you want Ed! Can't you see I'm busy here!?" I backed up a bit to avoid his hands flailing around. "S-Se-Seth asked to sp-speak with y-you..." I said softly, not wanting to anger him further. "Oh. Okay then." His tone quickly turned from pure rage into realization. He trotted off, not even knowing where Seth was. He left so quickly I didn't get the chance to tell him. Behind me, I heard two loud sighs of relief coming from Ursula and Zander "That was a close one." Zander muttered, "How dare he threaten to cut off my beautiful hair!" Ursula screamed. I knew we would never hear the end of her complaining so I left to get that coffee from the kitchen.
I was desperately trying to recall how Seth liked his coffee, even though I had made him coffee plenty of times before. I was starting to overthink things again; I didn't want to interrupt him if he was talking to Dr. Z. I facepalmed, how simple he liked his coffee, and I completely forgot. He liked his coffee strong, with no milk or sugar. I tried it once, it tasted terrible but I would never tell him that, he didn't seem to mind it. I started boiling the kettle and getting his mug from the cupboard, I took a teaspoon and lifted three scoops of instant coffee into the mug, he needed the caffeine. I think anyone would need a bit of caffeine to put up with Dr. Z, even though I prefer tea.
After making his coffee I had started to make myself a cup of tea. I'm sure Dr. Z was able to find Seth and gave him a massive list of things to do. Dr. Z rarely did any work himself; he would give all the work he didn't want to do to Ursula, Zander, Seth, and me. Now, with the time machine broken we would all get double the amount of work we would usually get. I couldn't wait...
I walked down the seemingly endless corridors, thinking about all the work I'd have to do. I didn't mind helping in the engine room or making small devices and parts for machinery although I was hoping that most of my work would involve the computer. I wouldn't say that I have many talents, but when it came to computers, I would consider myself very talented. I absolutely adored coding and making small games. I made one about pirates once, I showed it to Dr. Z and, per usual, he hated it. I was used to his Disapproval though, so it didn't bother me anymore.
I reached the doors of the engine room, they were large, dark grey, and metallic, it contrasted against the pastel blue flooring of the rest of Zeta Point. I paused for a second to listen through the crack. And nothing. I knocked and without waiting for an answer I gave a gentle push to the door and peeked my head through. Seth was kneeling on the floor, spanner in hand, fixing a bolt that must have come loose from the crash. "S-Seth I-I-I have your c-coffee, I h-hope Dr. Z-Z didn't e-annoy you too m-much." cursed stutter "Ah, thank you Ed, Dr. Z just wanted to know what was damaged." I handed him his coffee and sat on the cold metal flooring beside him. I took a small sip from my tea.
A sad-sounding sigh escaped his mouth. "I told Dr. Z it would take around three months to finish if we're able to get the parts quickly." He picked up his coffee, took a long sip from it and sat beside me. "Did h-he offer t-to he-help you?" I asked, I already knew the answer. He gave a small chuckle which surprised me. "Of course not, Ed, don't be ridiculous." I felt bad for him, Dr. Z just left him to do all of this on his own with no help whatsoever. "W-well, you kno-know I'm always here if you need me." "I know, Ed. Thank you." I wasn't sure how to respond, so I didn't. We sat in silence for a minute or two. Even though the floor was cold, I felt comfortable beside him.
"I-I have an idea!" I didn't mean to shout so loudly." Oh?" Seth said curiously, waiting for me to explain myself. I set my mug down, spilling some tea as I did so, I'll clean it up later. "I'll be back in a m-minute s-s-stay h-here!" I had a great idea to maybe help him relax.
I returned about five minutes later, my tea had gone slightly cold. I pushed open the door using my back as my hands were being used to carry my laptop, a large pillow and two blankets. "I'm back!" I tried not to shout as loudly this time around. Seth lifted his head to face me. He tilted his head to the side and questioned "So, what's this 'idea' of yours?" "Well, I thought it would be nice if you took this evening to relax before you start working... I know this cool movie that just came out, I thought you would be interested in maybe watching it with me?" I wasn't quite sure if he liked movies but I hoped that he would say yes. He paused and I started to panic. what if he hates movies? What if he hates me? "Sure." The sense of fear vanished and all that was left was excitement.
I began setting up my laptop and laying down blankets. He offered to help, I politely declined, I wanted him to relax.
The rest of the evening went well, he enjoyed the movie and so did I. "Again, thank you, Ed." He said, calmly. "A-Anytime, Seth." I smiled at him, and surprisingly, he smiled back.
