Right now, my little brother and I are trying to convince my mother that we can stay home alone while she and father are gone for a few days. I mean, he's 11 while I am 13, so I'd say that we were old enough. But obviously mother would beg to differ.

"You know katie, this does mean that you are gonna be the one to get and cook dinner, right?" My mother said, hands on her hips as she gives me a questioning look. I smile.

"I know mother, don't worry I can handle it. Besides, it's only three days, what's the worst that could happen?" I say with a reassuring tone. She looks at me with a face that tells me my answer without her even saying it, 'A lot'

"Fine" she sighs. "You and your brother can stay here by yourselves. However, under no circumstances are you allowed to go out of the house past 12:00 pm. And remember to lock the doors and turn out the lights before bed." She says, giving us both a kiss on the forehead.

"Promise!" We say in unison. We hear a honk outside coming from our father. He has an impatient face on and motions for mother to hurry. She sighs.

"Well I better get to the car before your father makes a fuss, goodbye my darlings, be careful!" She says as she steps out onto our porch heading to the car.

My brother and I look at each other and then the kitchen. We smile before heading to get some snacks.

"Katieeee" My brother whines from the living room. "When are you gonna go and get us some food?" He asks looking up from his video game. I sigh, realizing that I'm getting kinda hungry too.

"Right now I guess" I say, putting my book down. He gives a tiny cheer and yells a thank you as I go outside. I'm not a pro like my mom is at getting and cooking food, but I might as well try. I walk down the street of the neighborhood when I come across a sketchy van. I give a strange look, that's when out of the corner of my eye, a man that seems to be in his 40's, is staring at me from the front of the van.

"Hello there missy, what are you doing walking around here all alone?" He asks in a gruff voice. I take a good look at him. From what I can see, he seems to be okayly (Let's just pretend that's a word 😅) put together, I guess he just found out that he wanted his job to be trying to kidnap children. 'Perfect', I think to myself as I give a slight smile to the man.

"I was just taking a short walk around the neighborhood" I lie, he seems to be buying it so far. "What are you doing?" I ask. He seems a little taken a back by the question and hesitates before regaining his composure.

"Uh... Photography" He says nervously, probably wondering if I would buy his obvious lie. I smile, pretending I believed him. He seems relieved. "Would you like a ride home? Im sure you're tired, and I have lots of candy in here" He says, holding up a lollipop. Honestly, this dude needs to step up his game to try and kidnap a 13 year old.

"I would love that very much actually, thank you!" I say, giving a smile. He looks at me, surprised that I would oblige to his offer. That only lasted however, for a few moments before he hops out of the sketchy van and opens the door for me, smirking. He wasn't lying though, he did have candy back here. Bonus desert, sweet!

I feel kind of bad lying to him though, but then again it's partly his fault. He did decide to try and kidnap me. I wonder if mom ever feels guilty when she does this. But I mean, it can't be helped, this is how my family does things.

Plus, when it comes down to it, she did say that I was in charge of getting dinner, and she has ways told me that these kind of people are just so easy to catch.
