No boys allowed
That was it.
Ashleigh let out a sigh of relief. High school was over. Her final exams were done and dusted. She stepped out of the school building for the last time and was hit by a cool breeze of freedom. This was it. The world was her oyster, and all she had to do was get over her shellfish allergy.
"We did it!" She squealed as she charged at her best friend, almost knocking her off her feet.
"We did it!" Erin squealed back.
The two girls hugged and jumped up and down with excitement. They had been inseparable since they were eight, and had shared every high and low. Finally this was it, the highest of the highs.
"We're free!" A male voice exclaimed from behind them.
Connor wrapped his arms around Erin's waist, lifted her up and spun her around. She spat out a cheerful laugh.
Ashleigh joined in, but suddenly her heart wasn't in it.
To say the girls were inseparable wouldn't be a lie, but to say they shared everything would be. Ever since they were young Erin had never told Ashley who she liked. Erin's love life was one of the greatest secrets Ashley had never known. Ashleigh knew that she wasn't a virgin, but she didn't know who Erin had had sex with. She had enough suitors that it could be any one of the guys at school.
Ashleigh on the other hand shared everything. Who she liked, who she didn't, and how far she'd been with whom. Granted it wasn't very far, guys didn't seem to flock to her the way they did to Erin.
"Hi Ash," Connor said as he gave her an awkward one armed hug.
"Hi," she sheepishly responded. Where was her excited lift up and spin hug?
Just because she was a virgin didn't mean she was a prude! Why did no one ever try their luck with her when Erin got all the attention?
"So what are you girls planning on doing before starting college?" Connor may have asked both of them, but the question was clearly directed at Erin.
"Just hanging out really," she answered before Ashleigh could get a word in, not that it made a difference if she had. Ashleigh had nothing to say. What could she say when now all she could think about was college. For the first time in living memory she and Erin were going to be separated. Not like a holiday where they'd be separated for like a week or so, but properly separated. Like half a country separated.
She looked over at her best friend. How was she going to do it alone? Erin would be fine, she always was. She had that cool mysterious vibe that people had always been attracted to, but what about her awkward friend? Ashleigh knew that all her friends only spent time with her because they wanted to get to know Erin. How does one make friends without a cool best friend to lure people in with?
"What's up Ash?" Erin asked, clearly noticing the deer in the headlights expression plastered all over her face.
"Nothing," Ashleigh brushed off.
Out of the corner of her eye, Ashleigh saw Connor's hand slide down Erin's waist and to her perfectly round butt.
No sooner had it grazed over the fabric of her short skirt than Erin sharply jabbed him in the stomach with her elbow.
Maybe Connor wasn't the mystery boy she was fucking.
Ashleigh looked over the crowd of faces for the last time. How many of the boys had she had a crush on over the years? How many late nights had Erin stayed up with her, giving her advice on how to approach them. None of it had ever worked. She'd never had a boyfriend. Never even got to second base. She was eighteen and only ever kissed two guys. Now she was off to college with no experience and no bestie to call in for backup.
She just knew she was going to end up a forty year old virgin.
Boys were only ever attracted to the Erin's of the world. The little Ashleighs of the world would just slip through the cracks with no one to notice.
"I'm probably just going to head home now," Ashleigh mumbled to Erin. "See you later."
"I'll walk with you," Erin said cheerfully as she looped her arm over Ashleigh's shoulder and the two started on their way.
"I'll-um" Connor fumbled as he followed, "I'll go with you."
"It's fine," Erin said as she almost pulled Ashleigh away from him. "Later."
"Bye," he called out desperately to her.
"Urgh," she groaned when we were out of earshot of him, "he's so pathetic."
"I know," Ashleigh lied as she laughed along with her. Erin knew how much Ashleigh liked Connor, but like everyone else, he only had eyes for her.
"I can't wait to ditch this old town," Erin said.
"Me too," Ashleigh lied. This old town was everything she knew.the real world was scary. Yes, there were thousands more boys out there that she would meet when she was out there, ones that had never met Erin, but that also just meant thousands of people to ignore her when she needed them the most.
This was it.
The world was waiting for her, but she didn't want to go.
