People die every day. No one knows how, when, or where. That's the greatest struggle of mankind, the reason we destroy everything. We do it all because of the fear of death.
A clock ticking from another room interrupted the silence I faced while staring at my computer's blank screen. My raven black hair covered my face as I wiped my eyes yawning. I picked up my phone from the table where I was sitting. Many notifications hung on my screen, mostly from social media sites updating me. However, one was from a friend.
"Hey, Areum! I was heading out with Sophie tomorrow wanna join?" Elizabeth messaged me hours ago. I didn't decide to respond yet. Looking around my dull apartment, I went to the nearest window by my table. I opened the curtain and looked down at the city below me. I watched the cars still crowded on the streets below, even while at night. New York was always pretty. My phone buzzed, I could hear it vibrating from the table. I walked over, glancing at the clock. 12:30 A.M. I was curious about who would be messaging me until I saw the notification. Jaron.
Jaron is my boyfriend of 4 years. We met senor year of highschool. He's a dictator, everything I do he must know about. After graduation, I went straight into art and writing. Jaron supported me during the roughest part of getting started in my career. I still haven't staked my claim. He uses it against me and is holding me in a relationship I don't want to be in. I can't leave yet. I have to pay him back for everything. If I don't. No, I don't want to think about it. I mostly try to do everything he says. When I don't, he gets violent.
"Hey, babe. The guys and I are getting drinks. You have to come, wear something nice." It had a winky face next to it. I looked at the text and dropped my phone. I was dazed as I looked at the brushes on my wrists and ankles. I leaned down to pick it up, I was shaking and nearly dropped it again. Without thinking, I texted back, "I can't I have to turn in my manuscript." I immediately regretted it.
"I'll pick you up." He wrote back almost immediately.
"Babe, that's okay. I'll join you later." I tried to stop him but he never read my message.
I frantically grabbed my backpack. I stuffed my laptop, phone, chargers, clothes, toiletries, blankets, and art supplies. He was almost here I knew it. I grabbed my apartment keys and ran into the hall. The stairs were beaten up, but knowing Jaron wouldn't take them I ran towards them. I heard the elevator ding and disappeared around the corner. I was halfway down the long stairwell when I heard banging and yelling. I was almost at the bottom when I heard a gun. He had shot the door, I could just tell. I peered around the corner of the door from the stairwell. I noticed his friends waiting and on the lookout. They all seemed pretty hammered so all I had to do was wait for them to look away. I dashed for the lobby door, making it out by a whim. I turned down the crowded New York street. There weren't many people. I knew that Jaron would notice I left soon enough. I ducked into an alley. I frantically grabbed my phone from my pocket, returning to the text from Elizabeth.
"I would love to. Can I come over tonight, people are working in my apartment because of a burst pipe." I sent the text and sighed slouching against a wall. Why did I come here in the first place?
I was born Areum Young to Jeffery and Bom Young. I was raised in Pennsylvania in the suburbs. While most of my family is American, my grandmother came to the U.S. from Korea and raised my mother. I don't know much about the culture, I was born and raised in the U.S. I spent the first 16 years of my life in that small town in Pennsylvania.
I came to New York for the art opportunities and spent my last years of high school here. I haven't even been in the city for too long, and I get myself in this trouble. In mid-thought, my phone buzzed. It was Elizabeth.
"Oh yeah sure! Sophie and I just finished at a bar on Main, wanna meet there?"
"Yeah! See you soon!" I replied and ran towards Main Street. It wasn't too far away. I was so close yet so far away until I heard a voice come from behind me.
"Areum! Come here this instant!" It was Jaron. With no time to think, the bulky, tall man started running after me. I picked up my pace. I'm almost there! I turned down the street to my right, I was finally on Main. I heard Jaron's panting catching up and frantically looked around for Elizabeth and Sophie. I noticed them waving at me from across the street. Without thinking twice I ran into the road.
At that moment I looked to my left and noticed a big truck. It was heading right towards me at full speed. Then everything went black.
The next thing I felt was the worst headache of my life. Everything felt different. My ears wouldn't stop ringing as I was enveloped in darkness. Am I dead? That was the only thought in my head as I slowly opened my eyes. The light was everywhere, as I became more aware of my surroundings I started to notice details of the surrounding area. I was on something plush, probably grass, birds were chirping and trees were all around me. I tried standing up but ended up tripping over my own feet.
"What the-" I immediately covered my mouth with my hands. My voice was deeper. Terrified I looked down at my hands, they seemed dainty as ever but my chest felt lighter. Pulling the ultimate test, I lifted my pants and looked in. I immediately jumped back after seeing what had happened to me. I started slipping and fell next to a very close river that I had not noticed before. I immediately looked into the water and saw my reflection.
My feminine completion was mostly the same, I was slightly skinnier and my hair was to my shoulders. I'm a feminine male, what is happening to me?
