Chapter 1

My Late Night Jog

I'd just finished ten long hours of working at the mall. It was late and I was tired. Nevertheless, I determined to jog off the weight I'd gained over the summer. My motivation was a handsome, charismatic, pre-med student I hoped to establish a more permanent relationship with once college resumed in the fall.

I believed that I could love him.

And for that I told myself his dazzling smile and penetrating eyes made the jogging worth it all. I rested my head against the back of the bus seat to remove my hips from my sight. The feat was impossible and yet the physical gesture provided some emotional comfort. Shaking my head, I still couldn't believe I had gained eight pounds in just a few months. Guilt, shame, and the hope of a budding relationship drove me to make one of the dumbest decisions of my life.

Stepping off the bus, I yawned and looked up into the dark sky. The stars, the moon, and the streetlights illuminated the grounds dark canvas. It never dawned on me that a young woman jogging alone at night was an easy target for men with impure motives. When you're young, a fearless stupidity invades your being.

By the time I arrived home, changed clothes, and chatted with my roommate, it was almost eleven o'clock at night. Self-preservation was the last thing on my mind.

"See you later," I yelled to my roommate as I closed the door behind me. Our duplex was located in an up and coming neighborhood. The neighborhood was lined with historical and craftsman-style homes, but the ghetto was nearby in every direction.

My entire jogging route was about five miles. It included a major, well-lit road lined with public stores such as McDonald's and Chick-Fil-A. However, there were several streets lined with abandoned buildings, closed businesses, bushes, and homes sitting far from the road.

Right, left, right, left. With each step, my thoughts trailed to visions of my handsome pre-med student. I was also hoping that my hips were shrinking with each lift of my foot. I was undaunted by the darkness of the quiet streets and vacant buildings until I heard a small voice echo inside my head.
