I was walking back to the safe house after a quiet walk. The creatures of Grim are getting stronger and that makes it harder to kill them. With my sword in my hand, I open the door.
The safe house is the only place where the monsters won't go. Almost like a force field to keep them out. All of the towns people gathered there, men, women, and children. The men were required to fight and hunt while the women tend to the children.
When I got in, I immediately knew something was wrong. I didn't hear any children laughing. There normally would be a child or two to greet me or the hunting party. I got my sword ready as I ran into the children's area. Nobody. Not a single sign of them. The same for the females and men.
I was about to leave the room when I saw something in the corner by the hay stacks. There was a hole in the ground and that's when I saw it. Red eyes. I knew none of the kids had red eyes as I pointed my sword at it's direction. "You sick bastard, where are they!" I demand as it just made a sound, almost like laughter.
The creature resembled a worm with a turtle shell on its back. It's teeth was sharp, enough to pierce through a human bone. It's teeth clattered as it focused it's crimson red eyes on me.
I ran up to cut the worm-like creature but another one came out and and took me from under. A third appeared and surrounded me. I was trapped with no way out. I struggled to fight as I held my sword Midnight close. Everytime I tried to cut my way out, they used they're spiked tails to defend themselves. I grew tired with each slash until they managed to knock Midnight out of my hands. As I got prepared for the strike, I closed my eyes and waited to be reunited with my loved ones.
One...two....three....it never happened. I opened my eyes and saw a masked swordsman in front of me. They had a sword and it was being pointed at the creatures. With insane speed, they sliced and diced the three worms until they were dead. The masked sword-user turned towards me but before they could say anything, more of those worm-creatures came out of the ground.
I used this chance to grab Midnight and wield the sword once again. I saw that he was having a bit of trouble so I rolled back over to him and blocked an incoming tail strike.
We stood back to back, ready to fight. "Before we start with the onslaught, the name is Janus. You?"The masked warrior looked at me before saying "You may call me Shadow."
"Shadow....cool name." I grinned before we ran at the creatures.
They weren't hard to kill but it wasn't easy either. They had a shell-like armor on that neither my or Shadow's sword could penetrate. I changed my sword into a shotgun and tried shooting it but the bullets just bounced off like it was nothing. It wasn't until the creature leaned up that I saw its weakness, it's belly. There was nothing underneath it to protect itself. Shadow must have realized it too cause when I turned to tell him, he already thrust his sword into the creature's penetration spot.
After about what seemed like an eternity, we finally killed them off. I turned to say thanks but no one was there.. All that was left was a note that said "Beacon Academy." Beacon was an elite school where only the best hunters and huntress go to train. If they was from Beacon, then I knew where to go next. I will not stop until I find this masked swordsman. I grabbed my stuff, leaving without turning back.
As I left the safe house, I looked back at the place I grew up in and came to know. "I'll avenge you all. I'll become stronger so no one else has to endure this...ever again." I told myself before making the long and tiresome journey.
