Today is the day I take the Aptitude Test. This test will tell me what faction I fit into. There are five factions. Erudite, Candor, Abnegation, Amity, and Dauntless.
Abnegation is my home. My mother's name is Natalie Prior, and my brother's name is Caleb. My father, Andrew Prior, is one of our leaders. Abnegation is for the selfless. We blame selfishness for the destruction of our previous community. We help the factionless. The factionless are for people who don't fit into any faction.
I stand to my feet and put on my clothing designated to my faction. Loose gray clothing. My faction is very modest. We believe that to be selfless we must not be vain.
I walk out of my room and see my brother Caleb sitting on his bed. He stands up and walks with me down the stairs into the living room to get ready for our Test.
"Caleb, Tobias, come here. I need to trim your hair." My mother says. Here in Abnegation our hair must be cut regularly so that we look clean, and so that we aren't jealous others hair and looks.
I let Caleb go first. He stands, and I sit on the couch. Mother stands behind him. For a moment she steps in front of Caleb. She types in a code into the wall and pulls it open. Hidden behind it is a mirror. As soon as the wall opens Caleb eyes drop. Mother cuts his hair, and he turns to me.
"Tobias, good luck today."
"Thank you." Caleb then brushes off his shoulders, knocking off the rest of the cut hair.
"Your turn." Mother says with a slim smile slowly growing ear to ear. She then turns on the razor and starts at the front of my hairline. When she gets to my ear, she lightly pulls it down to avoid cutting it. Unlike my brother I keep catching my self looking into the mirror. I think mother notices, because when we are done, she closes the mirror lock and says, "That's all you get, rules are rules." I turn to sit on the couch beside Caleb when father walks into the house. We stand up and walk towards him along with mother.
Though Abnegation is not very fond of physical contact, father walks up to meet us and we, as a family, exchange hugs. He wishes us good luck, and mother says that she loves us, but we need to make our way towards the Test Facility. Caleb and I say our goodbyes and head out the door.
We arrive at the Test Facility and get into the line of Abnegation. I look around and see many people. I put my head down mimicking many of my Abnegation peers when a boy from Candor dressed in black and white walks over to our line. Candors blame dishonesty for the destruction of our world. They never lie and say what ever comes to there mind. Personally I think they are big mouths, but I keep my thoughts to myself because to say my opinion would be to selfish. The Candor is tall, lean, and muscular, unlike me he has dark brownish-black hair and is pale skinned. I have light brown hair, and I am lightly tanned.
He is talking to a boy I do not know and I can tell the Candor is being rude to the Abnegation. I start to walk towards them, but Caleb steps in my way.
"Don't Tobias." I slightly glare at him, but my face slowly turns back into its normal emotionless smirk.
The line starts to move forward as we are escorted towards the meeting room. All factions will go here together to learn why we are taking the test, even though we already know why.
The Erudite lady in blue starts the assembly. The Erudite blame stupidity for the destruction of the world. They crave knowledge about everything and anything. As she explains the reason we are here, her words morph into a faded sound as I stare at the wall in a dreamless haze. When she is done we are directed towards the test rooms. I stand in front of my door. When the buzzer rings I open it an step inside. After a quick introduction I sit in my chair and she tells me to drink a serum. I tilt my head back and gulp the blue liquid down. The world goes dark.
My eyes shoot open to see Tori. She looks worried as she grabs my arm and tells me to get up.
"Hurry." She says as she pulls me towards the back door.
"What's wrong." I ask, "What is my test result."
"Your test was inconclusive."
"What do you mean?"
"You are divergent. I put you in as Abnegation, but you are Abnegation... Erudite... and Dauntless..."
"Dauntless" I say under my breath.
"You must not tell anyone. Not your family or your friends."
"Well what am I supposed to do tomorrow? The test was supposed to tell me what to choose."
"Well, the test didn't work for you." Tori said angrily as she adjusted her voice so that no one would overhear us.
"Now go before an advisor comes. Just tell your family the serum made you sick, and you had to go home early."
With that she pushes me out the back, and shuts the door slowly in front of my face. What does this mean? I am selfless. I am intelligent. I am brave. I am Tobias Prior.
