It was late November 1938, the cold autumn's breeze brushing through the trees of Salisbury Plain. The shadows of the Stonehenge casted down on the valley beneath, where families and couples enjoyed the joyful music played by a small band in the middays sun

I was sitting on a bench with my family as we ate ice cream together, I remember having strawberry ice cream that day, it was delicious! Whilst looking around i saw a young man with beautiful green eyes and a dimply smile making his was towards me

I looked up at him meeting his gaze, his features even more perfect up close, lost in my own thoughts I didn't hear what he had said at first. Once I had finally snapped out of my silly little daze, i noticed him looking down at me with a small smile as a chuckle left his lips
"I had asked if you'd join me for a dance"
He said holding out his hand for me to take, which of course I accepted

We had spent the next few hours dancing hand in hand as the music played throughout the evening, as the night came to an end, we had promised each other to meet again, and we did, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, there wasn't a day we didn't see each other

There was no doubt I loved him as he did me, so soon enough we decided to pack our bags and set off to London, where are new life together would begin

Our time in London flew by so quickly, we soon had our own little house to call home and not long after he proposed, And of course i said yes! that was one of the happiest days of my life

A month or so later we were married, as happy as we could ever be, especially beings as we would soon be hearing the pitter patter of our little one, that's right i was with child, second happiest day of my life, he couldn't believe it when i told him, tears of joy were shed by both of us that day
"There are no words to describe how much I love you!" He had said spinning me around in his arms, I was so happy, i had a man who was kind and loving, a perfect little house with everything we needed, and of course our soon to be little one

The nine months had passed like a breeze and before we knew it, our little Petal was born, I was so happy to finally meet our precious little one, He was over the moon, as soon as he heard the baby's first cries, he almost jumped in joy, it was such a happy memory to which i will cherish till the day I die

But unfortunately not everything lasts, I remember the day exactly, the first of September 1939, we were awoken by a knock on our door early that morning
My husband had opened the door and was greeted by a man in uniform, who had handed him a letter before leaving, as soon as my husband had opened said letter,  just by the look on his face I could tell it was bad news

Turns out he had been called up by the army to fight for his country in Africa, It was a sad day for us all

I was in tears almost every day, up until the day he left, that day was the last time i ever saw him, me waving him off at the station as the train set off on it's journey, It's the last memory I have of him

Me and little Petal carried on with the thought of him still deep in our hearts, i remember we would sit down every Friday evening and write him a letter, well i would write and Petal would make him a small drawing

Months passed with many letters sent, but one evening there was a knock on the door, i had opened the door to find an officer, hat in hand as he handed me a stack of small letters and a silver chain with a tag on it, I had looked back at him confused until he spoke
"I am sorry to inform that your husband was killed in combat earlier today, I am deeply sorry for your loss" He bowed politely before stepping away

I recall that to be the worst day of my life, i had never felt so empty, but then again, at least i still had little Petal

I think having to tell her that daddy wouldn't be coming back home was the hardest thing for me, she was only 3 at the time, so she didn't really understand what was going on

So I told her that daddy had become a star  in the night's sky, so she could always see him at night when the stars came out,
We would pop outside every night to wish him goodnight

Every week we would visit his grave to tell him all sorts of stories

As the years passed, there wasn't a day i didn't think of him, and how proud he'd be of our little Petal

Now our little Petal is all grown up, soon about to have a family of her own, and I, as i write this, will soon be joining my beloved

For my days are now numbered, So wait just a little longer for me love! As i will soon join you up there amongst the stars.

I love you more than words can describe Tom!

Yours truly
