We've become numb. When the end of the world was declared, panic had set in. The daze that comes when you realise death was finally given an invitation date to take your life, enveloped us. There were tears and fears, hopelessness and eventual acceptance.
Our dreams of having a family and growing together crumbled. Now the only emotion left was loss.
I hear his silent whimpers at night when we lie in bed and i pretend to sleep. He didn't want to worry me. I was already sad enough and he tried to keep up a strong demeanour. But we both knew, as the world cave in, we are gone. Forever.
'Doomsday' they called it. The day the world ends. And it was today. We called up our family, said goodbyes.
It was the final night of our lives so we dressed up nicely. 'When death comes, we are going in style' we joked but our voices trembled. I put on my prettiest dress while he, his best suit. We switched on the old record player we received as a gift and poured the only bottle of wine left in the kitchen. Our glasses clinked and alcohol flowed through our blood.
As the music made its way around our small apartment, we danced. In the pitiful living space we had, his hands were on my waist and mine on his shoulders, and we stepped gingerly on the floor. So close then, but soon far apart.
But at that moment, as the earth burned to the ground and with Chopin's waltz in our ears, we held on tightly and nothing else mattered.
Forever. I loved that word. A word to say something was eternal although nothing ever was. But this time it was forever.
