After the supermarket we drove Daisy to her apartment. She generously invited to make us dinner, and we gladly accepted. Both of us were starving. We hadn't eaten anything all day.
We were sitting down at her dining room table when she walked in, trying to balance three bowls of salad. She set them down and gave us each one. I wasn't one to like rabbit food, but in all honesty, it looked really good.
Shredded cheese and chunks of meat were sprinkled on the lettuce. It was finished of by French salad dressing. I picked up my fork and looked up to see the other two already eating. I dug in without a second thought.
"Daisy, this is really good. Especially for salad." James said smiling as he took another bite.
She smiled shyly. "So, Mason, what got into you to do all of this?" The question was sudden and I didn't know how to answer. Could I just tell this girl that in dying? That me and James are finding a way to make the rest of my life easier? "You don't have to answer that, of course. Usually there a method behind the madness, I just wanted to know yours."
"Um..." I said looking over at James. He gave me a look that said 'tell her what you want'. "I'm going to be one hundred percent honest, I guess... I want to become a famous YouTuber, so I'm doing exciting things and James is gonna record them."
He looked over at me in disbelief. I was usually honest with people, but I don't want anyone feeling sorry for me. I don't want people telling me that I should live the rest of my life on my death bed. I don't want people telling me I can see if there are any treatments. I just want an exciting last thirty days. You can't think about what you don't have, you need to live what you do.
"That's cool, what is your channel about?" She asked with a little smile on her face, actually interested in what we were doing.
"Our-" I didn't get the chance to speak before James cut in and talked for me.
"We're making a little web series called, what was it? Cross It Off The List?" He looked at me and I nodded. "Yeah, it's about Mason going around and completing his bucket list, like we said earlier, for the entertainment of thousands of people. It's gonna be thirty videos long, one every day."
"That's really cool." She said, her smile growing wider. It looked like she was lost in thought, in a little fantasy she didn't want to escape from. Her expression faltered but regained its appearance forcefully. "I wish I could be part of something as cool as that."
I sit awkwardly, not knowing if I should ask her to come with or not. I look at James, once again, hoping he could help me make a decision.
"Daisy," I say lightly, almost not audibly. "You've been a kind host to us, and I'd like to thank you for that. I would feel terrible if I didn't invite you to be part of this little series."
Her face lit up brighter than any star I've ever seen. "Are you serious?" She asked, practically shouting. Her voice was filled with joy and purity. "Oh my gosh! I have to pack some stuff than I can go, oh my gosh I can't believe this is happening!"
She got up and ran into a different room, leaving her bowl behind. I got up to follow her, turning back to James once to see him taking my bowl. He looked me in the eyes and I smiled teasingly.
I just left, following her without saying anything. I stepped inside of her bedroom looking at her take her out of her drawer.
"Is there anyone that'll be an inconvenience to you leaving?" I ask shyly.
"Nope," she said bluntly. "I moved out a few months ago, when I turned eighteen, so there should be no problems with my parents, and I don't have a boyfriend so that should be a problems."
