Chapter 2

An Attempt of Leaving

Lysandra

The morning air was warm and bright, it seemed too hopeful in light of current circumstances. My body ached from waking up outside, but I loved sleeping under the stars. Despite the nightmare I had, we now had a course of action, a focus. As we made our way to Merrilora's hut, I felt my gaze flit between Thelran and the black blade sheathed at Caspian's hip.

"It must have required a great willpower to even get that blade." I glanced over to see that Merrilora had altered her step so she was walking beside me.

"It did." I stated, retraining my eyes at the back of Caspian's head. Why on Evrand was she speaking to me now?

"And I'm sure it cost more." She sighed, obviously gauging my reaction to her words. She knew she would hit a nerve, especially when it came to Illine.

"It did." I said through gritted teeth. "You know well it did. But we wouldn't have had to have done anything if people like you had left the Abyss alone." Her smug look faltered briefly.

"We all do what we must. I did what I must. You have no idea what I have had to sacrifice."

"What about what we have sacrificed to correct that mistake?" I stopped walking and turned to face her. "What Thelran sacrificed!" My fists were clenched at my sides.

"You could have said no." She smirked, knowing full well that saying no was not an option.

"So could you." I countered, and began walking again. "We likely would not be in this mess if you had not succumbed to the desire of power."

"Keep your voice down." She growled, following after me.

"Why? Does your precious son not know your dirty secret? Does he not know that the reason the Abyss has grown so bad is because people like you abused it to this point?" For the first time since she had opened her mouth, Merrilora was silent. I glanced at her wide eyed. "By the Maker, Merrilora! He needs to know! That is relevant information for him."

"No. He needs to know nothing of the sort. It has little to no connection to what you are dealing with now. Just leave it be." She strode past me, keeping her gaze forward. The reason why all this was happening was not relevant? The reason the Abyss had grown so out of hand, why it was affecting more people every day was not important?

"If you won't tell him, I will." My brows furrowed, my knuckles white from how tightly my fists were clenched. I followed after the group, resolved to open Caspian's eyes to the truth.

"Are you sure about this?" I eyed Merrilora, as she approached Thelran, who laid on the linen cloth that was over her table.

"What is she doing?" Caspian asked. Merrilora glanced over at him before returning a scowl to me.

"I'm not sure of anything. I haven't been sure of anything since this whole mess started. And using this," she glanced at her hands, "when the very thing it comes from is tearing this world apart is the most unsure I have ever been." She sighed. "But I do what I must. As I suspect you have." The weight of her words made me falter. She continued with her magic and then excused herself. After some slaps and interrogation, Thelran turned to me.

"Maybe Lys can help?" Thelran sighed. "If the memories are there wouldn't her ability be able to reveal them?"

"I'm not sure if it works that way." I sighed, glancing at my hands. "Most of the time it has just been visions of possible futures. Seeing memories is something different entirely."

"Well, we know that this was triggered in the first place by touching the sword." said Alwine, stroking the stubble on his chin. "Maybe if Thelran touched the sword again, while Lys also touched the sword and him we might get some answers."
