They were brothers – yet they'd not felt like brothers ever since Sirius outright disowned him the moment he'd been sorted into Slytherin which in turn felt poetically ironic later on when Walburga blasted her disowned son from the family tapestry. Poetic justice didn't make the sickening feeling in the pit of Regulus stomach go away as he wanted to feel that brotherly affection he'd been denied only growing ever so more while in his head he kept lying to himself that Sirius would one day return home and they could be a family again. Regulus didn't know when that hope finally broke, but by the time he entered the cave, he knew full well all those dreams and hopes were scattered to the wind.
