The End of A War

Loud booms of canon shot from all around me as I ran up and down the man-made tunnel, looking for the injured. “Incoming!” A soldier yelled and I turned to see a giant boulder hurling straight towards me. I ran as fast as I could but the giant rock landed a few feet behind me, shaking the Earth and throwing me up in the air with it.

I screamed as I was thrown as bullets and grenades colored the air in front of me. Panting, I closed my eyes ready to meet with death when I fell onto something hard and soft.

“Get up!” A voice screamed. I shook with fear as I felt hands around my shoulders, shaking me out of my startled state. “Get up if you want to live!” I shot my eyes open as another cannon boomed from behind. I quickly got up from the ground and felt my ankle burn. I wanted to quit but I know that if I do that now, I’ll die.

Tears filled my eyes as the pain became more unbearable. I didn’t want to look down, afraid that if I did, I might lose all hope and accept that death is the better option. The soldier turned back to see me falling behind. “Grab my hand”, he stuck his hand at me. I reached for it and he flinched as if my touch had burned him. His eyes wide with shock as they slowly made their way down to meet mine. Another boom sounded in the distance and his eyes shot to where it came. “Tsk, we have to go now”, he said angrily. He pulled on my hand with such force that I almost fell forward.

I tried my best to keep up with him as we both panted and ran through the maze the Marleyan soldiers had dug to protect themselves from grenades and falling cannons. When we reached the end, we were met with many other soldiers who had survived that attack. Most of the soldiers were injured but it wasn’t enough to cause an alarm, others were on the brink of death as their flesh were barely hanging on to them.

I pulled my hand away from the soldier and ran to the man whose face was barely hanging on. I was a few feet away from him when the man that had saved me pulled me back. “It’s not safe!” He warned.

“Thank you for your help but I’m the medic and it’s my job to treat them”, I said, shrugging his hand off my shoulder.

“You should treat yourself first before treating him. It looks like it’s going to get infected”, his green eyes shot down to my ankle. I looked down and winced as my fibula was protruding out of the skin. I brought the back of my hand to my mouth as I swallowed down the bile that was rising from the back of my throat. “Let me help”, he offered as he knelt down on the ground. “Sit”, he ordered me.

I took the backpack that carried my medical supplies off my shoulders and slowly sat down on the ground while keeping my injured leg as straight as I could. I let out a loud grunt as I got closer to the ground when I lost my balance and had to put pressure on the injured leg for balance. “Fuck!” I screamed as I hit the back of my head on the soft dirt. He opened up my bag and took out some supplies and placed them next to my leg.

Taking my shoe off, he ripped the bottom of my pants to reveal the impacted area. Blood and dirt clung to my leg and even more blood seeped out with every breath I took. “This is going to hurt”, he warned me as he squirts some saline onto his hands and then the wound. I flinched as the liquid burned my skin, cleaning the open wound. He placed one hand firmly below my knee and the other at the bone that stuck out of my skin. He looked up at me with his emerald green eyes as loud thumping could be heard. I looked up to see the jaw titan running towards our direction before jumping over and showering us with dirt. As I was distracted by Porco’s acrobatic act, the soldier pushed my bone back causing me to see stars as I screamed in pain.
