Far, far away in a village near the ocean lived a girl named Iona (which means "violet" in Greek).
Iona was the daughter of Uranus, the god of the universe, and was born to a beautiful, kind-hearted, mortal woman, who had caught Uranus' eye whilst he was looking over the scenery of the majestic ocean waves crashing down on the warm, pale, sparkling sand. When Iona was born, she was blessed with the gift of charm, as a reward for her mother's kindness. However, as Iona grew older, she had started to abuse her gift to fulfill her own selfish desires.

"Good evening fair maiden, how may I help you on this fine day?" The goldsmith asked.
"Good evening to you too! I just stopped by to natter a bit." Iona responded, smiling.
"That sounds delightful!" The jeweler said, "I don't get much company, so please feel welcome to do so." Iona and the goldsmith talked for quite a bit before she decided that it was finally time to use her magnetizing allure on him.
"Enough about me," he said, "Tell me about yourself."
Taking advantage of the moment she said, "Well, I was born in this village, but my father, Uranus, had a secret affair with my mother, whose beauty had entranced him."
"Wow! You must look a lot like your mother then, your beauty is ethereal!" The goldsmith said, starting to fall for her charm.
"Speaking of which, my jewelry would make you look even lovelier! " The goldsmith said, getting up to bring Iona some jewelry. Iona, who was satisfied with yet another one of her desires being fulfilled, was gifted the jewelry from the goldsmith.

One day, while Iona was walking along the shore, she heard the fishermen praising Poseidon for giving them enough fish to sell for the day. Annoyed, Iona went to the fishermen and said,
"Poseidon isn't the one helping you get fish, it's your skills. He doesn't care about the people here, the days you don't get fish are when he's hogging them for his feasts like the greedy, lazy, unintelligent god he is."
Poseidon, who was eavesdropping on what Iona was saying to the fisherman, was enraged with fury. He rose from the ocean and bellowed,
"You dare insult me? The god of the seven seas, and brother of Zeus? You may be half goddess, but you can never dare insult a god!"
He continued, "Since you seem to think that you have the power to insult a god, you must be very knowledgeable yourself. I challenge you to a contest in which we will race to find the three, golden, pearls that Aite, the goddess of mischief, hid away from me for centuries in the ocean. We will start the challenge at sunrise." Iona was petrified but managed to keep a cocky tone and say,
"I accept your challenge, we'll see who's more intelligent than the other."
Satisfied, Poseidon says, "However, if you fail to find the pearls before I do, I will turn you into algae." Iona agrees and they both leave the beach.

Poseidon knew that the pearls were well hidden and couldn't easily be found, so he went to Hephaestus, the god of fire, and asked him to make jewelry that was light on land but became extremely heavy in water. Hephaestus usually didn't make jewelry, but since Poseidon is the brother of Zeus, his father, he couldn't decline and made the jewelry to the best of his ability.

When sunrise came, Iona went to the beach to meet Poseidon like she had promised. She nervously walked to where Poseidon was and could almost hear the seagulls laughing at her for making such a terrible mistake. Poseidon smiled and put the necklaces and bracelets that Hephaestus had made on her. They were made out of hundreds of the rarest, finest, most beautiful gems and crystals on earth. Iona was too excited to be suspicious about the jewelry, and forgot to take them off before racing Poseidon.
"I've brought you these bracelets and necklaces as a gift you will keep if you win the race against me." Poseidon said, trying not to make Iona become skeptical of the jewelry.
Iona accepted the jewelry and got ready to dive into the water.

Iona dives into the water, and feels the jewelry get extremely heavy. She manages to grab hold of a rock and tries to pull herself out of the water.
"You tricked me!" Iona yelled furiously, but all she could do was listen to Poseidon's booming laughter before her hand slipped, and her body sank to the ocean floor where she had drowned. Poseidon swam down to Iona's lifeless body, brought it to the surface, wielded his trident, and turned Iona into glowing violet algae where she now floats on the surface of ocean waters.
