A police officer who was awaiting his day in court for the fatal shooting of a suspected robber 12 years ago has died.
Ag Cpl Hamre Lackraj was found unresponsive at his home at Barker Trace, Coalmine, Sangre Grande, on Tuesday night, and taken to the Sangre Grande Area Hospital.
He died shortly before midnight while receiving treatment.
His wife posted a message of grief on Facebook, and tributes from his colleagues, relatives and friends poured in on social media for the officer.
"Tonight, it saddens me to post the death of my husband Hamre, Lackey, load monster, Bull neck, Reddo. Truth in life are hard to accept. His memories will never be forgotten! Those will always remain with us forever...My husband and children's father R.I.P Ag Cpl Lackraj #13705. I still can't believe 😪 💔🙏. Words can't express how I'm feeling", the wife wrote.
Lackraj, who was formerly attached to the Inter-Agency Task Force, was placed on suspension following the fatal shooting of a suspected bandit at Cheers bar at Sangre Grande in March 2008.
During that incident, Lackraj was liming at the bar with his brother-in-law, Abdul Ali, and other relatives when two robbers announced a hold-up.
Lackraj drew his personal firearm and a shoot-out with the criminals ensued.
Ali was struck by a bullet to the neck and died.
One of the suspected robbers, Johnny Dolland, a deportee, was shot five times and died at the scene.
The second suspected robber escaped.
There was an inquest into Dolland's death, after which in February 2017 the presiding magistrate instructed Lackraj to be tried for manslaughter at the Sangre Grande magistrates' court.
The case was pending hearing.
An autopsy is expected to be done this week to determine the cause of Lackraj's death.
