I looked away for one moment then looked back; the lights flashed before my eyes. I quickly grabbed the persons had next to me and whispered to him, "I love you."
I opened my eyes and in the background I could hear the sound of a television on Cooking Channel. I reaching up to rub my eyes gently so I could see. Opening up my eyes I realized that I was in a hospital. "Where am I?" I murmured quietly. Someone heard me and walked into the room and said, "You are in the hospital, you got in a crash last night about two o'clock in the morning with a semi-rig coming straight towards you. The person that was with you didn't receive as much damage as you he just suffered a few fractures to the ribs." "John, how is he, is he OK, what happened to him?!" I tried to get up quickly to see him but the nurse ran over to me to keep me down.
After I finished worrying about John I worried about me. "What happened to me? Was I OK?" I then again tried to get up but she came to stop me. Why can't I get up?" "Well I am sorry to say but when you got hit with the semi-rig you instantly were paralyzed from the waist down." the nurse said hesitantly.I tried to move my legs but I couldn't. "So now I am going to have to be in a wheel chair my whole life?" "Yes I am afraid so."
I was out of the hospital in a week or so and I knew being in a wheel chair was going to be hard but not this hard. I would have gotten out of the hospital earlier but they kept me in there a little long to get me used to the wheel chair more. It was easy in the hospital but now that I am out it is much harder. Every turn you make, when you have to get up out of it to go to bed, going to the bathroom, everything was hard.
I was still having trouble moving around but I decided to roll down the street to go see John and how he was doing. I didn't like the fact that my wheel chair reacted to all the little bumps and cracks in the ground. Turning around the corner i could see John's house. Knock, Knock, Knock! John opened the door with a warm greeting of his crooked smile. That always got me. "Hi how are you, how are you doing?" "Good. How are you?"John asked in a concerned voice. "Well its a long story can I come in?" I asked. "Uh sure I was just in the middle of doing some therapy for my rib area that they told me to do." "That's OK." I said.
John sat down on the couch with a grunt. "So how is the wheel chair going?" John asked concerned. "Well it's hard but I guess it is something I am going to have to get used to. So how is your ribs, does it hurt at all?" John stopped a moment and thought,"Well it is getting better but it still hurts. I am just getting through it one day at a time." "Yeah me too. I just can't believe what happen that night can be so life changing, you know?" "I hear you." John said. "I looked away for one second then looked back and all i saw was an incoming car coming right at us. I thought I was going to die so i reached over and grabbed your hand and said "I love you." just in case it was our last time together." John and I sat there for a moment thinking back on the accident.
"Look Isabelle I know it was a horrible night that night but we are going to get through this together." That was the first time I have heard m name in a long time, in fact I haven't looked in the mirror since before the accident. How do I look right now? I couldn't go to the bathroom here because he didn't have the special toilet for the handicapped."I need ot go home and do some of my therapy." "OK do you need help getting home?" John asked. "No but I will talk to you later."
It had taken me longer to get home than it did coming back. I thought that reason was because I was wanting to see John but now I am not looking forward to any thing. Riding along the side walk listen to the sound of the birds chirp and wing chimes trickle together. I could finally see my house from here but I wasn't in a rush. Only that I had to go to the bathroom.
Wheeling into the house going straight to the bathroom. The first thing I did was I lifted my self up with all my force up on the toilet. After I was finished I washed my hands without looking up at my self in the mirror. Dried off my hands and prepared my self for what I looked like.
