Olivia's Point of View
I walk into my AP chemistry class, taking a seat at the empty lab desk at the back of the classroom. I sit, staring out the window, watching the trees sway in the wind, the sun beaming down on the grass. I watch the classroom slowly fill up, people sitting at the 6 person desks, their friends slowly coming to join them. It's the science classrooms that really show who people's friends are.
Teachers often spend the first few weeks of the year trying to split up the disruptive and loud groups, while moving some of the quieter students around in an attempt at creating groups that won't disturb the class. Of course, it never works. We're teenagers, you can't tell us where to sit and expect us to actually do it if it means being split up from our friends.
"Liv, hey. Is it okay if I sit here?" a deep voice interrupts my thoughts. I look up to see Josh, one of the boys on the football team with Hudson and Chase, standing in front of me. His dark hair neatly combed, and his tan complemented by the light grey t-shirt and black shorts he's wearing.
"Yeah, of course. How was your summer?" I ask, moving my bag from the seat beside me and turning on my seat to face him, bringing my legs up on my seat and crossing them as I speak.
Josh and I talk for a few minutes - mainly just about each other's summers and what subjects and things we're each taking this year - while we wait for the rest of the class to come in to begin the lesson. A few minutes into the lesson the door swings open, scaring me half to death. I look over at the door, everyone else in the class already staring too.
In walks three boys. Hudson, Alyssa's boyfriend Jaden and Chase. Just my fucking luck. The three of them head straight for me, Jaden sitting across from me, Hudson beside him and Chase pretty much pushes Josh out of the chair beside me and forces him to sit elsewhere.
I mouth a quick 'I'm sorry' to Josh as he walks away and sits beside a group of the football boys. He offers a soft smile, reassuring me not to stress about it as he takes out his notebook.
I feel Chase's arm make its way around my shoulders, his hand resting on my arm as he pulls out his phone and scrolls through Instagram. I look over at him, pushing his arm off of mine, only for him to place it right back where it was.
"Chase, get your arm off me," I complain, my voice soft to ensure our teacher doesn't get interrupted. I sigh as I push his arm away again, only for him to put it right back... again.
"Come on princess, lighten up a little," he smirks, looking me up and down and then quickly over at Hudson and back at me, his eyes fixated on mine. He's always been a flirt, with everyone, not just me. It's frustrating though, I can't stand the guy. He's annoying and arrogant, he's an asshole.
As we hold eye contact for a split second I can't help but take notice of the bruise around his eye. I'd noticed when he got in the car this morning but, it's colour has deepened throughout the course of the day.
I look over at Hudson and Jaden, Jaden chuckling to himself as he watches our argument. Hudson, not paying any attention at all. I turn to face Chase, our eyes connecting once again. "I'm not your princess Chase. Get your fucking arm off of me," I say, my tone stern.
He removes his arm, scoffing as he does, shaking his head. I look around at the class, Ms. Matthews shooting a glare mine and Chase's way, girls in the class spun around on their seats watching the two of us, annoyed scowls on their faces.
I open up my laptop, typing up the notes written on the whiteboard, trying to distract myself from the sudden attention I'm receiving from my class. Chase looks over at me every so often, his eyes lingering on my lips each time before he looks away. It's clear he doesn't realise I've noticed his occasional stares, but I do. I always have. I've never truly understood why he does it, maybe to piss me off or check for a reaction, I'm really not sure.
The lesson ends and Chase's hand holds my laptop open as I try to close it and put it away. I look over at him, raising an eyebrow in question. "Do you need me to send you the notes?" I ask, annoyance clear in my tone.
"Grey, you just know me so well, don't you?" he snickers, nodding his head.
He's right... unfortunately I do know him, way too well for my liking. He's always getting me to send him my notes, mainly because he never pays attention in class and because he knows mine are always easy to follow when he's cramming the night before an exam.
Weirdest part is, he's not stupid. He's actually quite intelligent, you wouldn't know it but he's a straight A student – topping most of his classes, despite his minimal effort. It's frustrating that he's so effortlessly intelligent and could pretty much get into any college he wants without even needing to fight for a place. Especially when people like me have to keep focussed during the school year and actually pay attention in class to even have a fighting chance at scraping their way into a good college.
I shake my head, rolling my eyes as I forward him the document, closing the laptop afterwards and rushing out of the classroom to meet Alyssa for our first day afternoon coffee tradition. Every semester on the first day of school Lyss and I go down to the local coffee shop and debrief after the days over. That tradition slowly became a every week thing and it's one of the only things every Monday that keeps me sane for the remainder of the week.
I make my way to her locker where she's already standing waiting for me. "Hey, how was Chem?" she asks, a very obvious laugh in her tone.
"Oh, it was great. My new favourite class as I'm sure Jaden told you," I shake my head, laughing as I do.
I could see Jaden sitting on his phone the majority of the class, obviously texting Lyss due to the ridiculous smile on his face every time he got a notification. He tells her everything, he always has. They've been together since they were 14. Honestly if any couple is going to make it through high school and go on to get married, it's them. Lyss and Jaden's relationship is what every girl dreams of having, they're ridiculously adorable together.
We make our way to the small café on the waterfront. I admire it's curb appeal. The light grey and blue painted exterior, white trimming around the roof. It's kind of old, but it's cute. It's kind of like the symbol of North Shore. All the locals know about the café and eat there regularly. It's part of the North Shore charm.
We sit down in our regular booth at the back of the store, ordering our coffees and a plate of Nachos to share while we sit down and talk about our day.
