"How do I blow a bubble?"
It was Summer. The sun was blaring and orange, the roads hazy from the heat and the cicadas louder than ever.
Your mother sat beside you, arms extended out behind her as she leaned against them for support, looking out at the neighbourhood. The two of you were just enjoying each other's company on your front porch. Enjoying the time for what it was.
She turned to you when you spoke, a warm and doting smile plastered on her lips as she responded happily. "It's hard to explain, Y/N. You'll figure out how to do it sooner or later."
Popping her own bubble, she continued, "You can try now, though. You always have to start somewhere!"
Face radiating childish hope and wonder, you nodded rapidly. Your mother chuckled, racing into her purse and fetching out the bubblegum packet. You grabbed the wad handed to you, placing it in your mouth with your small hands.
It tasted nice, a mixture of pure sweetness, and a punch type flavour. You hummed as you chewed, an innocent smile taking up your features as the sun prickled your skin.
Feeling all too powerful and triumphant, you blew, like you would a balloon.
All that ended up happening was your spit flying everywhere, making your mother laugh genuinely and openly.
"I can't do it by myself," you sighed, sulking as you rested your soft cheek against your fist.
Birds started squawking then, a car driving past as you huffed.
Your mother shook her head placatingly, "The first person to make a bubble with bubblegum wasn't taught how to. Y/N, I want you to remember to never rely on people. You need to be independent to survive this world. I always like to think to myself - Even your own shadow leaves when there's darkness."
You raised your eyebrows, turning to your mother. "You sound like an old grandma."
You giggled as your mother jokingly put on an angry face, but couldn't mask her smile.
"I might sound like an old lady, but I'm right. 'Even your own shadow leaves in darkness'. Live by that." She looked at a blue-haired kid riding his bike down the path unseeingly, zoning out as her thoughts clouded over in a memory.
"Ma?" Her head snapped to yours at the call, her breath picking up slightly before exhaling and relaxing again.
She places a warm hand on your head, softly playing with your hair in a semi-apology. "Sorry, I was just thinking about something. Not anything to worry your pretty little head about, though!"
You nodded, before attempting to blow your bubblegum again, and failing miserably.
"Watch me," your mother spoke, so you did. Her face shone in the evening light, hair painted in the golden glow. She blew a big bubble, glancing at you as she did, before it popped.
You gasped, eyes wide as she laughed gently. "That looks so fun, I can't wait til' I can do it!" You cheered, leaning in to wrap your arms around your mother's neck.
Her arms pulled you into her chest, stroking your back with nothing but a mother's love. "We should go inside, I can hear Katsuma crying. Your dad would probably like me in there helping him out."
You nodded, latching onto your mother's hand as you went back into your quaint house, Mahoro stealing you away from your mother instantly to go and play dolls with her.
That was the last time you had seen your mother.
And now, rolling up to the U.A. dorms, you thought to yourself; Even your own shadow leaves in darkness.
