As usual, Sai had absolutely no idea how he was meant to feel. He could feel his heart racing with what he thought was anticipation, and a thick and sharp pain darting through his hand and up his arm.

Boy was he glad he hadn't given Ino his drawing hand to squeeze if she needed, or else his days of being an artist would've been over in a flash. Her hands gripped tighter than you'd think...

But still, as he watched her face contort as she screamed both at him and in agony, more than anything he was confused. It crossed his mind that he should be worried or upset that his wife was in such pain: but he wasn't. Ino was strong - he knew that well from the amount of times she'd punched him - so why would she need his help in order to have a baby other than the obvious bit of making it?

No, she was fine. He just had to let her scream and growl at him and everyone she saw, and believe that she'd get through it.

Of course that wasn't the correct approach, but how would Sai have known that?

"Shit, Sai! Say something!" screamed Ino, tears streaming down her face as her clutch tightened. "Anything!"

Calm as anything, Sai cocked his head to one side. "I'm not sure what to say, beautiful. Just that you'll do great. You don't even need me here."

"Yes I do! I'm about to pass out! SAI!" Squeezing her eyes tightly shut, the blonde cried out again, panting as she went. "Sai. Help me..."

That's when it kicked in.

Although he wasn't sure how he was meant to feel, at the sound of those two words, he knew exactly how he did feel.

Help me...

Useless. More than anything he felt useless and like there was nothing he could do. Whenever the medical-nin told Ino to push, she'd look at Sai with an expression that clearly meant something, but he didn't understand. It wasn't like he could push for her, was it? That was impossible.

"How long is this going to take?" asked Sai, biting down on his lower lip as he flicked a strand of wet hair from Ino's brow, the perspiration running down her face. "We've been here for 4 hours..."

"4 hours?!"

"Yes, Ino. 4 hours. I would like a chair, I've been standing up for aged and it's becoming very uncomfortable."

As if the pain disappeared completely she turned her head to him and frowned, her mouth wide open in sickened disbelief. "I'm giving birth to our child and you're complaining about not having a chair? Well I'm fucking sorry."

Sai knew it was probably meant to be funny. The med-nin laughed, after all. But that didn't mean he understood it one bit.

"I can't believe you," Ino groaned, squeezing his hand tighter.

Opening his mouth to respond, Sai wrapped his free hand around her clenched fish, but she cut him off before he could make a sound.

"Fuck it, actually," winced the blonde girl. "I can believe you. Why would I expect every different from you? You're you."

.

Just remembering the events of two days prior made Ino's head spin and ache, almost as much as the screaming of the baby that rattled around her mind. It was a constant, high pitched squeak, like white noise. She knew for a fact if it wasn't her baby making the sound, she wouldn't cried herself.
