~Frank~

As I let myself in the back door, I kick off my dirty-old converse, the words "Mom! I'm home!" catch in my throat, I pause, remembering that there no longer is anyone to spin around from her computer, glasses perched on nose, to scold me teasingly by standing up and pointing to the beat-up shoes. Instead, I turn back to the shoes and bend down, pick them up ever-so-lightly and place them on the shoe rack.

A huge, booming voice fills my ears "HEY THERE FRANK" and in comes a sweaty, dirty man, who lumbers over to me and awkwardly shakes my hand.

"Hey, dad" I mumble, looking at the stains in the old rug. He pats my head and turns around a couple times, as if unsure where he is.

"Um, yes, that's right! TO THE BATHROOM" he shouts, much too loudly considering we are two feet apart. He trudges over to the small door and goes in, before opening it once more. "Frank" he says, much quieter now. "Yeah?" I ask, unsure of what he will declare. "I got you some peanut butter, you know? The chunky kind you like?"

"Thanks dad" I say sincerly, giving a small smile before going into the kitchen.

It didn't used to be like this, he used to be a normal dad, I sigh, remembering how we would play catch and my mother would bring us fresh lemonade.

He's like a different person, more like a socially awkward uncle than the always laughing father I remember.
