Chapter 3
Lovely. Looked like I was walking. I pulled up a little and parked the car behind the sign. I turned the car off and unbuckled the chest. I wrapped it in my jacket too, just to be safe. I got out of the car and started walking up the road. I didn’t bother to take the keys or lock the door, a bad habit but oh well. It was a little chilly but I didn’t mind. I hadn’t even bothered to turn the air on in the car so I was kind of hot. My long black hair kept coming up and twisting around my face in the breeze. I stopped, putting the chest down, to put it in a high pony tail. There, much better. I picked up the chest and continued walking.
After ten minutes of walking I was starting to wonder if maybe I had gone the wrong way. The moon had finally risen and I could see the road infront of me. It seemed to go on forever. I moaned and readjusted my grip on the chest. This was ridiculous. I didn’t see why no cars were allowed to drive up her. Ugh. I continued to walk. Another two minutes went by and then I heard something. I glanced behind me, nothing. Hmm, it was probably just a bird or something. I continued walking.
My neck pricked like someone was watching me and I stopped to listen. I heard rustling again and this time it was louder. I looked behind me and saw a man walking quickly along the road. Something glinted in his hand from the moonlight. It was a silver gun. I started running and I heard him start to run too. Then it started to sound like he wasn’t the only one. A quick look over my shoulder confirmed that suspicion. There was five guys after me and all of them had guns. This was just perfect. I would have to stray off the road. I heard a bang and a bullet just barely missed my head. Oh God. I headed straight into the trees running as fast as I could.
I went in the general direction of where I had been heading but turning every so often and then turning again. My throat was dry and my chest was burning. I couldn’t run anymore. I stopped and listened. I could just barely hear them. They were talking and I think they were splitting up. There was no way I was getting out of here. If I wanted to keep the chest safe, I knew that’s what they were after they had to be, I’d have to hide it and hope Elijah found it. I ran a little deeper into the forest until I found the perfect spot. There was a little bush next to a tree that they would never find. I put the chest in the bush carefully and covered the little opening with a fallen branch. But before I did that I took my jacket and the cloth off of it, careful not to touch it. I found a big rock that about the same size as the chest. I lifted it up and wrapped the cloth and jacket around it. Boy, it was pretty heavy. I didn’t know how long I would be able to run with this.
I retraced my steps and kept going until I heard their voices again. I started running and out of nowhere something has me by the hair. I screamed and automatically tried to get loose.
“Give it up girly. Give us the chest and we’ll let you go.” A deep guys voice said. I turned my head as best I could to look at him. I was still struggling and I looked him dead in the eye.
“No.”
“If that’s how you want it.” He gripped my pony tail tighter and lifted it up. I screamed again. I was standing on my tip toes. Tears started sliding down my face. My bundle had dropped to the ground. He went to grab it but I aimed a kick at his face. He caught my foot, letting go of my hair which made me fall to the ground, and pulled it to the side. I heard a crack and a searing pain shot up through my leg. He broke my ankle. I screamed again.
“Oh shut up.” He said and he punched me in the face. I couldn’t see anything now and I could taste blood in my mouth. I fell back as my eyes closed. I went in and out of consciousness.
“Did you get it?” this voice was rougher and deeper than the other guy’s.
“No, I thought she had it but she must have hidden it. All she had was a rock.” The guy that had knocked me out replied. I slipped back into unconsciousness for I don’t know how long.
“What do we do with her?” this voice wasn’t as deep as the other two and he sounded younger than them.
“Kill her.” The first deep voice replied.
“No, take her. We could use her.” The second deep voice countered. I stirred. I would much rather them kill me. I was sure they were probably going to torture me for information I didn’t have.
“Give her this.” Another voice said. I tried to open my eyes, but I couldn’t. my head hurt too much. I felt rough hands grab my arm and what felt like a needle poke me.
“There she’ll be nice and quiet for a while, lets go.” Another new voice. Whatever they had just given me was making me really tired. I felt numb all over. I sighed. The last thing I felt was being thrown over someones shoulder…
The heat from the chest flared up again and then was gone. I could take my hand and my vision was back. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. What shocked me more than anything in that whole vision though was that I lived at 402 Maple Dr…
