The Dog Days

I woke up this morning and looked over at my clock. It was 7:00. I was going to be late for school! I flew out of bed and got dressed. I almost slipped down the stairs, ate some breakfast, and put on some make up.

"Macy, what are you doing up so early?", my mom asked while rubbing her eyes to get the sleepiness out of them.

"Getting ready for school," I replied angrily, "why didn't you wake me up when my alarm didn't go off?!"

"Because school doesn't start for another week", she told me, amusement playing across her face.

I felt really stupid at that moment. I set down my mascara and went to lay down on the couch. I turned on the tv to see if anything good was on. Nothing was, nothing ever is this early.

I decided to see if anyone could come over to hang out. I texted my friend Jessica, and when she didn't answer I started to spam her. I got bored waiting for her so I decided to go into the woods behind our house. It was light when I finally got out the door.

I unlatched the gate and entered the woods. I had been walking for a while when I found the little bridge that goes across the creek. By bridge I mean a couple pieces of plywood I found in our garage that Dad said I could use.

Mom told me I could walk across it, but that I couldn't go further into the woods because of the wolves in them. I told her that was stupid because I had read a book that said wolves were usually peaceful unless provoked. Even though I kept reminding her, she wouldn't risk losing her only child.

Occasionally I did though go deeper into the woods. It was amazing with all the birds singing and the trees playing with my hair. I had never even seen a wolf, let alone had one attack me.

I felt my phone vibrate against my leg. I took it out of my coat pocket and checked my texts. Jessica had finally answered me. She would come over in a few minutes and that she had to tell me something.

I was about to walk back when something caught my eye. I found two brown eyes looking back at me through the underbrush. A wolf. When I took a step toward it, it turned around and silently slide away. I wanted to follow it but Jessica would be here any second. So instead I turned around and went back to my house.
